Assemble all equipment. Check amount, concentration, type, and frequency of feeding on patient's chart.

Check expiration of formula.


Perform hand hygiene and put on PPE, if needed.
Identify the patient.
Explain procedure to the patient.
Cover chest with a clean towel.
Assess patient's abdomen.
Position patient with head of bed elevated at least 30 degrees to 45 degrees or as near normal position for
eating.
Check placement of feeding tube.
Attach the syringe to the open end of the tube and aspirate small amount of stomach content.
Remove plug from the feeding tube, and use syringe to inject 5 to 10 cc of air through the tube auscultate the
patient’s stomach with the stethoscope
After checking patency and proper placement of tube, proceed with feeding.

Remove the bulb or plunger from the syringe and attach the syringe to a pinched-off or clamped nasogastric
tube
Add the feeding to the syringe barrel.
Permit the feeding to flow in slowly. Raise or lower the syringe to adjust the flow as needed.
Pinch or clamp the tubing to stop the flow for a minute if the client experiences discomfort.
After administering the appropriate amount of formula, flush the tubing by adding about 60 ml of water,
disconnect the syringe from the feeding tube.
Cover the end of the feeding tube with its plug or cap
Leave the patient in semi-Fowlers or high Fowler’s position for at least 30 minutes. Ensure client comfort and
safety
Observe patient during and after feeding
Maintain position for at least an hour after feeding
Do after care of equipment.
Perform hand hygiene.
Document procedure.
