Relation Between Soil & Water

Soil and water have a very deep relationship with each other. In our Culture, both water and soil are
revered. They both play a very vital role in sustaining any life on Earth. Be it organisms, birds,
animals, plants or human as much every life on this Planet is dependent on Water, equally it is
dependent on soil for food.

Both are directly correlated as without abundant water there is no soil and without soil, water
cannot be retained. As both are interrelated, if we cannot retain nutrient rich soil, we cannot have
water on the Planet. Likewise, if there is not enough water to moisten the soil to enrich it with
nutrients, soil will be either sandy or dry with no microorganisms thriving in it.

The quality of rich soil determines how much it can hold water. If soil does not hold water, it has no
organic content in it. If the water has to flow and be a reason for nurturing plants on the Earth, it will
be because of soil. Without adequate water, the soil becomes lifeless with no nutrients in it to grow.
Also if the soil is not able to absorb the water completely and let it just flow off, the top layer i.e.
organic content in the topmost layer of the soil also will be washed off with water.

As we have lost the flow of water in rivers and have seen complete extinction of few old rivers that
used to flow in full glory, same way we are losing the nutrient rich soil for the most part of land.
Once a nutrient rich soil now is all filled with chemicals and fertilizers to an extent that soil is also
going in the way of extinction.
