1. I have. But it doesn’t feel as good as buying shoes in a real store. I’ve bought a few
pairs online, and I had to return some that just didn’t really fit me. For shoes, it’s

2. I wouldn’t spend much. I’d buy two or three pairs on average, so roughly 1,000 per
month.

3. I really hope to wear shoes that are both fashionable and comfortable. But some

3. Typing, I would say. As much as I enjoy handwriting experience, typing is much

more efficient and time-saving. See, when you write an essay for a course, it’s not
reasonable to write by hand. Also, it’s easier to modify the content withtyping.

3. I live in a comfortable and cozy flat. It is a duplex apartment. I live on the 21st floor.
From the window of my bedroom, I can overlook the garden in the housing estate. It

is stable and satisfactory; also, I'm considering buying a small flat.

5. I can see tall buildings, and an overpass.

6. Not really, although I visited some of my relatives in the countryside when I was
young. I didn’t stay for long, usually for one or two days.
7. No, I don’t suppose so. I'm used to living in a big city, with all the convenience of
transport and the variety of facilities. I imagine it would be difficult for me to kill time
if I were to live in the countryside.

I would like to talk about a Chinese science-fiction, the Three-body Problem, written
by Liu Cixin. This book has won the 2015 Hugo Prize, which is the most important
award in the circle of sci-fi books.
I am a big fan of science fictions, and I read Jules Verne when I was young.
So I started this one last month, and I soon found the plot so attractive that I couldn’t
stop whenever I picked it up.
The author depicts a picture of a lively universe, and outside the galaxy, there are
other planets with inhabitants, just like our Earth with human beings.
However, the creatures on one of these planets, have been suffering from extreme
climates for centuries, and thus plan to invade and take over Earth, after they’ve
come to know its existence. Of course, humans won’t let their homeland taken away,
and they draft strategies and schemes to fight back.
I would say the imaginary battles and those fantasies of civilizations on other planets
really impressed me a lot. And moreover, the book got me think. You see, when I was
deeply immersed in the story, I actually felt a bit concerned about the destiny of
mankind; I even doubted whether human exists as the only smart live creature in the
universe.

Part 3
1) Do you prefer books or movies?
2) Do you think it is very important to read the book before watching the movie
version of it?
3) Do boys and girls like the same kinds of books?
4) What kinds of books do Chinese people like reading?

1. I would say I prefer movies. I like reading, but I don’t have much time for intensive
reading. Now I basically read what we call self-improvement books, books that can
teach you job-related skills. For stories, I usually choose to watch movies instead,
since it’s much more faster.

2. No, I don’t think it necessary. For many stories, watching the movie version is good
enough. For example, crime stories are often adapted to movies, and if you read the
book ahead, then you’d know the plot, the murderer, the ending, and the surprised is
spoiled. So it’s better not to read the book before seeing the movie. Vice versa, I
probably wouldn’t go to see a movie that is adapted from a book that I’ve already
read.

3. It’s hard to tell. I believe it’s a kind of stereotype to think that boys are more into
exciting adventures and detective stories, while girls like romantic novels better. Take
me and my boyfriend, we love all kinds of books, ranging from fictions to social
studies. We choose books based on our need for the time and the quality of the
content. I don’t consider gender as a factor as to the preference of reading.

4. Chinese people like to read detective stories and historical fictions. Detective
stories are really popular, you could see they are on the best-seller shelves in most
bookstores. We like to read Agatha Christy, Allen Poe, Conan Doyle and his creation
Sherlock Holmes, as well as some Japanese writers. And fictions based on history are
also prevalent. We love to read and talk about our ancestors legendary life, and you
can learn a lot from history, like the way to manage a team, to deal with crisis, etc.

咖啡馆

Describe a café you like to visit
You should say :

30
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

Where it is
What kinds of food and drinks it serves
What you do there
And explain why you like to go there

There is a café near my home, called cats and coffee. It’s a really nice place; I often
visit it on Saturday afternoons, when I don’t have to work. The café serves a wide
range of drinks, like espresso, cappuccino, mocha, latte, and black tea, green tea.
Also, they have cakes, muffins, and other desserts that are tasteful. I particularly like
to order a cup of vanilla latte and a cream brulee. There are not so many customers,
since it’s not located in the downtown area. But I'm a regular attender. I like to spend
a whole weekend afternoon in this place, reading a book or watching a film on my
laptop. It’s very quiet, even on Saturday and Sunday. And the best part is, there are
six or seven cats keeping you company while you enjoy your coffee. Some of them
look lazy, and always sleep in the cat house, while others are pretty lively and
adorable, and will ask for your gentle stroke on their belly. I'm fond of playing with
these lovely little creatures, although it may not be a good idea to work with your
laptop in this place, coz they might tread on your keyboard and ruin your work.

Part 3
1) What kind of people would like to go to a café?
2) Why do young people like studying in a café instead of at home ?
3) Do old people like to drink cofee ?
4) Do Chinese people like to drink coffee?

1. I think mostly young people, mainly white collars and high school or college
students. They consider drinking coffee a fashionable lifestyle. Also, they like to meet
friends in a café, which is convenient for a conversation.

2. I'm told that while working in a less familiar and comfortable environment, it leads
you to high efficiency. Because you won’t get too comfy and cozy, and it’s better for
you to concentrate and get things done more quickly. By contrast, if you study at
home, you are easily distracted by too many things, like TV, gaming machine, snacks
or even your bed.

3. As far as I know, older people prefer drinking tea. On one hand, coffee doesn’t
have a long history in China, while tea does. So coffee is a sort of young people’s
choice. Also, green tea is believed to contain chemicals that are good to our health.
My father has a habit of drinking green tea on a daily basis.

(和上一题类似) In China, it’s basically the younger employees and students who drink

早起经历

part 2
Describe a time when you got up early
You should say :
When it was
What you did
Why you got up early
And how you felt about it

I remember once I got up as early as three o’clock in the morning. That was for a visit
to the Shanghai World Expo. Yeah, it was like 9 years ago, but I still remember it so
clearly. As much as I felt sleepy and tired, I had this determination that I must see the
China Pavilion. You know, this pavilion was supposed to be the most popular one, so
only a limited number of tourists were allowed in every day. And people who wanted
to have a glimpse would arrive early and wait in a line. So, I arrived at the entrance at
about 5 o’clock, where there was already a crowd waiting. Under the guidance of the
guard, we stood in a line, and waited and waited. The pavilion opened at 8, and
luckily I arrived early enough to be one of the limited number of visitors that could
get in. I was thrilled when I stepped into the pavilion, appreciating the artworks and
artifacts of traditional Chinese-style. I spent three hours on the exhibition, and when
I finished, I was totally worn out.

part 3
1) Do you know anyone who likes to get up early?
2) Why do people get up early?
3) What kinds of occasions need people to arrive early?
4) Why do some people like to stay up late?

1. Yeah, my mom. She is 56, and she has kept the habit of getting up early for years.
After she gets up, she would prepare breakfast for the family, and do the laundry,
clean the kitchen and tidy up the living room. There always seems to be a lot of stuff
to keep her busy in the morning.

2. I guess many people have to get up early, simply because they live far away from
their workplace. I used to get up at half past 6 in the morning, to catch the subway
and transfer to the bus line to get to my company. A lot of young employees choose
to live in the suburban areas and spend more than one hour on commute, because
living in the downtown area can be costly.

32
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

3. When you need to catch a train, or catch a flight, you have to arrive at the station
or the airport earlier than the scheduled time, in case of unexpectedthings.

4. There are different reasons. Some people stay up late to get their work done,
while others simply get addicted to games or social media and spend the night
playing with the computer or cellphone. Staying up late does do harm to your body,
everybody knows this. But in many cases, we just can’t help it. There are just too
many ways to kill time until 1 or 2 o’clock when we finally feel sleepy and decide to
go to sleep.

机智解决问题的人

part 2
Describe a person who solved a problem in a smart way
You should say :
who this person is
What the problem was
How he / she solved it
And explain why you think he / she did it in a smart way

This topic reminds me of my part-time job in a company that designs and sells
cosmetics last year. You see, because of the pandemic disease, our company suffered
great loss in revenue. It was around the Halloween’s Day,
and I was working in the marketing team, and the leader of our department, Sean,
proposed this brilliant idea. He decided to throw a Halloween party in a big
conference room, and invited people who worked for other companies in the same
building or the nearby buildings. He made us distribute the leaflets, on which it read,
“come to our party dressed up as your favorite movie character, and enjoy free
cocktails”. The invitation asked visitors to wear makeup, but in case some visitors
wished to dress up like a vampire or a princess but didn’t know how, we had
cosmetic products and there was a makeup artist providing help. And it was a great
party, a lot of fun and laughter, people came and talked, and guessed which
character they were dressed up into. We displayed many of our cosmetics products
on site, lipsticks, powder, eye shadow; people were trying our things out, and they
realized our cosmetics were pretty good, and then we sold a lot, as much as nearly
10,000! This party was an amazing idea, and it also helped to spread the word out.
You see, Sean organized more advertising campaign afterwards, and those who had
come to the Halloween party came back and continued to attend our later activities.
We established brand loyalty, and it helped increase the sales volume.

part 3
1) Do you think children are born smart or they learn to become smart?
2) How do children become smart at school?
3) Why are some people well-rounded and others only good at one thing?
33
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

4) Why does modern society need talents of all kinds?

1. This is a question of nature or nurture. Of course there are people who are born
gifted, but without learning and training, the inborn talent wouldn’t be fully
developed. By contrast, a child can learn to be smart; for example, learning maths
could improve a person’s logic thinking, for he would have to do a lot of analytic work;
with repeated practice of this kind, a person will definitely get smarter, coz he’d be
able to take multiple factors into consideration and come up with different solutions
accordingly.

2. Through learning from the teacher and working with other individuals. To begin
with, children need to gain knowledge to improve their cognitive ability in class.
That’s basically the most important thing in one’s early life. Also, I believe it’s
necessary to experience the fun and the challenge of cooperation, in which they
have to overcome conflicts, disagreements, and difficulties. They will gain valuable
skills out of this group work and become smarter quicker learners and better
speakers.

3. I would rather believe it is a matter of personal choice. To some extent, it has

something to do with natural talent; I mean, some people are simply born different,
born talented in many ways, like Leonardo Da Vinci, who was the greatest artist as
well as an inventor. But for normal people, I think, some people just have a wider
range of interests and they want to achieve something in different areas. For
example, there are famous actors who are not satisfied with success only in acting,
and they practice so hard to become excellent singers or dancers. On the other hand,
there also exist actors who simply love nothing but acting, and want to focus on that
particular job. I wouldn’t judge which is better. I think it’s just an individual’s choice,
that’s all.

4. Because modern society has become increasingly diversified. We have an ever-

increasing number of professions, from agriculture to industry, from entertainment
to internet technology. It’s a positive tendency that our society has more and more
segmented markets and differentiated industries. This is why we need talents of all
kinds. For example, I work for an online education company, which does not only
need teachers who can impart knowledge; computer engineers are equally
important, coz they make online learning happen, and make it as good as face-to-
face communication.

善待不喜欢的人

part 2
Describe a time you were friendly to someone you didn't like
You should say:
34
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

When and where it happened

who he/she was
Why you didn't like this person
And explain why you were friendly to him/her on that occasion

I remember when I was doing a group assignment for a business course last semester,
I had to cooperate with a guy named Sean. The teacher divided us randomly into
small groups, and we were asked to investigate a company's marketing strategies and
wrote a group report, which counted for half of the final assessment. So I took this
assignment seriously.
However, Sean didn’t seem like a typical good student. He was always late for our
group meetings, and occasionally even absent with no reason. And when he did
show up, he contributed little to our discussion. He was alwaysdistracted.
I was pretty furious, I have to admit. But I decided to play nice, and be rational. I
invited him to have a cup of coffee, and asked whether he was bothered by anything.
Then he told me he was having so many things on his plate that he felt overwhelmed.
At that time, he was preparing other important tests, including a language test, for
he was about to further his study in France, and then he had to attend the school’s
choir and get ready for the big performance.
I could tell he was truly frustrated and he put himself under great pressure. I could
totally relate to his feelings. I comforted him by telling some of my problems that I
was going through, making him realize that he was not alone: everyone has stress
and difficulty. Then I helped him go over his schedule, and make a to-do list to decide
which things were important and urgent and should be given priority to, and which
could wait to be handled later. He really appreciated my help.

part 3
1) Why are people friendly with the person they don't like?
2) What kinds of people are usually friendly?
3) What are the differences between being friendly and being polite?
4) What do you think of the people who are always straightforward?

1. I guess we often have to collaborate with people we don’t really like. The reason
we show our friendliness is that we wanna make the cooperation work, get things
done without involving personal emotions. Or, when we want to make an effort to
improve the relationship, we’d act positively to be nice and friendly.

2. People who are easygoing, who are gentle and kind, are usually considered
friendly. Also, people who have been raised well, or who have received good
education are usually friendly to others, because they have learned the importance
of respect and kindness.

3. I think being polite is a kind of way to show your good manners when faced with
strangers, and it demonstrates your respect towards other individuals in the same

35
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

place. For example, you say “thank you” to a waiter when he serves you, although it’s
within his job duty. However, being friendly means a gesture of good will. I think only
when you have at least some slight affection towards somebody, can you be friendly.
To put it in another way, you could maintain your politeness towards a person you
don’t really like, but that’s not being friendly. You can only be friendly to a person
you like.

4. I really admire this kind of person because I am not one of them. I am an

introvert, so sometimes I am not good at expressing myself. However, the people
who are always straightforward are usually extrovert and brave to show their
strengths. I hope I could be one of them in the future.

敬佩的商人

Part 2
Describe a businessman you admire
You should say :
who this person is
How you knew this person
What kinds of business this person does
And explain why you admire this person

I would like to talk about Jack Ma, who is a well-known businessman, founder and
former CEO of Alibaba Group. This is a highly successful internet-based businesses.
He is the first Chinese person that has appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine and
if I remember correctly, in 2014, he became the richest man in China and among the
top 50 in the world. Jack Ma is a hard-working, and persistent man. He wasn’t born
in a rich family, but he had his dreams and he has realized them with his diligence
and determination.
He saw an excellent opportunity when the Internet just started to get popular in
China in 1990s. He believed the new Internet technology could bring revolutionary
changes to people’s daily life. He established Taobao.com, which has been the largest
online shopping platform till now, and this creation has greatly boosted consumption
and facilitated trading.
Apart from his contribution to the industry, Jack Ma also does charity. He founded a
non-profit fund, and donated 100 million RMB to educational causes, to help
improve the educational conditions and facilities for rural areas. That’s why I admire
him. He set a good example for Chinese entrepreneurs.

Part 3
1.What do you think is the retirement age for men and women?
2.what kinds of qualities do people need to run their own business?
36
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

3.What do you think are the key factors that contribute to the success of a business?
4.If you had the opportunity to have your own business, what business would it be?
Why?

1. If I remember correctly, women’s retirement age is 55 years old and for men it is
60 years old. For workers working in hazardous environments, the retirement age can
be changed to 50 and 55. I think this is reasonable, but because people live longer in
these years, the government seems to be planning to delay the retirement age, but
specific policies still need to be discussed.

2. I think that for those who want to start a business, the most important thing is to
have integrity and be loyal to customers, markets, and shareholders. They should
have keen intuition and innovative spirit, know what customers
need, so that they can decide where their business is going. In addition, they need
extraordinary leadership so that they can manage their employees well, and
maintain the operation of the company.

3. Successful business requires entrepreneurs with leadership skills, scarce and

irreplaceable resources in the market, such as patents, technology that others do not
have, financial support and grasping business opportunities are also very important.

4. If I were to start my own business, I would choose to develop eco-friendly straws.

Now due to the plastic restriction order, businesses provide paper straws, but this
hurts the customer’s using experience because the drink through paper straws can
taste really bland and strange. I hope to develop a new type of straw that can satisfy
people’s happiness while protecting the environment.

优质的服务

part 2
Describe a good service you received
You should say :
what the service was
When you received it
Who you were with
And how you felt about it

I am going to describe a good service I received in Haidilao hot pot, first I have to
say/mention that Haidilao is the most popular restaurant among catering industry. It
is know for its excellence services, from distributing free gifts such as pop corns and
stuff toys to polishing customer’s shoes. Among all the homely service it offers,
birthday celebration is one of my favorite services. Last Sunday, my friend Jane and I
went to Haidilao hot pot to celebrate her 21 birthday. We had booked a table online

before we arrived there. To our surprise, their staff stood around the elevator aisle
and held a black board that with my friend’s name on it. We all shocked. And then
they started to sing various birthday songs. Actually, I felt a little bit awkward at that
time. Cause everybody was watching and wondering what was going on here.we
became the eye-catching title of Haidilao birthday star. It was an amazing experience.
Not just the food it self, but their high quality service we received.

1. What do you think of the relationship between companies and customers?

Well...it’s hard to say, cause the relationships between them are changing all the time.
If you were a loyal customer, you could be treated like the queen. This is exactly what
Haidilao hot pot is doing.

2. As a customer, what kinds of services would you expect to receive from a

company ?

That depends on what kinds of company it is. If we are talking about good service in
the catering industry, then I’d like to enjoy some different services, for example:
manicure or shoe polishing, you know, overturn the stereotype. But if we talk about
good service from the government or city council. Then I have to admit that I expect
nothing, as they’ve already done their best.

3.What kinds of jobs involve coping with the public ?

The way I see it, all kinds of jobs involve coping with the public.in the modern society,
one can do nothing without others’ help. The cleaners need the public to get their
job back on track as well as the mayor, without the public, the power doesn’t exist.

4. Why should companies react quickly when customers have difficulties?

There are hundred reasons to answer that question. The basic one is obligation. It’s
part of their daily job just like a student needs to study hard. Besides, good after-sell
service could bring lots of potential customers according to statistics.

Part 2
Describe a place you visited on vacation
You should say :
Where it is
when you went there
What you did there

And explain why you went there

I am going to describe a place that I visited and during summer holiday. The place is a
small village called DaYing, which is about 2 hours drive from my home. My friend
Kim and I accidentally found this place because of an off-road trip through the
jungle.at first we thought we were lost, the village was in the middle of nowhere.
What’s worse, when we took out our cellphone and tried to contact someone from
civilization, we lost signal. I was so desperate that blame Kim for everything. After I
came down, we got out of the vehicle and sought help from local people. We were
lucky enough because we found someone who knew how to get out of there. He led
us the way and we talked all through the road. He said their village was too small to
hold a great number of people. Recently, due to the urban centralization.Local
dwellers stared to move out, elderly people and kids were left inside the
village.which means there’s no one would want to make contributions to the place
they live.

Part 3
1) What are some popular attractions that people like to visit in yourcountry?

My country has a lot of tourists attractions.Natural resources like mountain Huang

and mountain Tai.historical sites like,The renowned summer palace and forbidden
city, the great wall.

2) Do old people and young people choose different places to go on vacation? Why?

In my view, elderly people and young people definitely choose the same place to go
on holidays. The reason is that recent years when it comes to travel,a great number
of people would like to order a package travel, because it is convenient and time-
saving. For young generation, they don’t need to worry about making travel
itinerary, for old generation, safety problems could be solved once and for all.

3) What do young people and old people think about when making travelplans?

Like I mentioned, there is no difference in picking a tourist destination between old

people and young people. And I suppose they might consider the same questions,
such as budgets and time commitment.

4) How do people get to know a new place?

Due to the fast-paced life which bought by technology, I believe people get to know
something new by updating daily news from their smart phones, everyone has their
own cellphones, you might heard that: you can live without food and water but you
can’t live without your cellphone. Interesting and horrible. We receive information

from the screen and save it in our brain, next, according to our daily schedule we pick
up a suitable time to go.

有创造力的人

Part 2
Describe creative person whose work you admire
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
What creative things he/she has done
And explain why you think he/she is creative

I want to talk about the most talented footballer Leo Messi. He is a professional
player from Argentina. When Messi was a child, he could not even be a healthy
person due to a rare disease, but he gradually became one of the greatest players in
the world with his unique understanding of football and creative playing method.
Every time I watch Messi play, I always marvel at Messi's performance. What I want
to say is that he is a creative and extraordinary player, because he always dribbles
and attacks along the route that opponents and even teammates can't find.
Opponents can only block his talent through fouls. He is really like a dancer on the
field. Actualy, Messi started his career in the old boys' team of Argentina, won
numerous honors in the club, and led the Argentine national team to win the Copa
America again after 28 years. And even though he is full of honor, he is still very
modest and low-key. He still focuses on football itself. However, when others succeed,
they focus more on enjoying life.

Part 3
1) Do you think you are a creative person?

I don’t know, cause the definition changes all the time, in the past, we call someone
creative only because he or she has a different way of doing things. I mean a clever
solution to fix problems.but now. Even a burglar or a thief could be described as
brainy.why? Because everybody falls into their traps.

2) Is it good for children to learn arts?

Yes and no, as an old saying goes:interest is the best teacher, it is good for children to
learn Chinese calligraphy only if they are interested in it.otherwise, it could be a
waste of time.save it for something usefully.

3) What kinds of jobs require people to be creative?

40
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

Actually, I reckon jobs that sometimes is difficult to get require people to be

creative.for example like the chef executives in the company. They need to make a
new proposal every week.besides, their customer ask for new solutions all the
time.they need to deal with pressure all the time and give a new opinion.

4) Do you think leaders need to have creative ability?

Yes, I strongly agree that leaders need to be creative.but I don’t think creative is the
key factor of being a leader. I mean creative does help a lot.for example, solving the
problems during the crisis and put up a new solution.but these qualities just lies in
the surface, being a leader you still need to be patient and hold a positive attitude.

自行车/摩托车汽车旅行

Part 2
Describe a bicycle/motorcycle/car trip you would like to go
You should say:
Who you would like to go with
Where you would like to go
When you would like to go
And explain why you would like to go by bicycle/motorcycle/car

I am going to talk about a trip, which I had with my girlfriend on national holiday. The
reason why we choose the National Day holiday is that we can have very few long
holidays at the same time in a year, and Inner Mongolia is known as the " golden
september silver october" travel slogan, so we can see some good scenery in Inner
Mongolia at this time. Under the blue sky and white clouds, Inner Mongolia prairie is
a charming place and an ideal tourist destination for people at home and abroad.
In addition, Inner Mongolia is the birthplace of many nomadic nationalities in the
north. My girlfriend and I also want to enjoy the exotic culture which is different from
Chinese traditional culture.
In addition to the famous Ordos prairie, we also plan to go to Hulun Lake. This is the
largest lake in Inner Mongolia and the fifth largest lake in China. The grasses are lush
and green and the scenery is very beautiful. We plan to drive there, because the
scenery on the way to Inner Mongolia is also very beautiful. In addition, it has always
been our wish for us to drive together, so driving is our best choice.

part 3
1) Which form of vehicle is more popular in your country, bikes, cars or motorcycles?

Since I live in Beijing.a metropolis city.i suppose e-scooter is the most popular

41

vehicles in the city. Cause cars and buses could be stuck at any time of the
day.whereas e-scooter has its own path. The only thing you need to worry about is
the traffic lights.

2) Do you think air pollution comes mostly from mobile vehicles?

Absolutely yes. The toxic fumes which eliminated from the automobile exhaust pipe
are the biggest cause of air pollution. Except from this, the chemical wastes release
from the factory is another source of pollution. Since the electric cars haven’t been
proved 100% save.what the government could do is nothing.

3) Do you think people need to change the way of transportation drastically to

protect the environment?

I do agree that people should raise their awareness of protecting the environment,
cause the earth is the only planet we could rely on. But I doubt about whether we
could do it immediately, an old Chinese saying goes: everything starts from step by
step. You can’t run if you can’t walk, to address the issue we must do it step by step.

4) How are the transportation systems in urban areas and rural areasdifferent?

There are lots of differences between the transportation in the city and that of in
rural areas. First, there will be various transportation choices for you if you live in the
city, subway or railway, bus or uber. It’s very convenient. However, if you live in the
countryside, there isn’t much choice for you. Secondly, you may have lots of plans to
get to one place, but you can only have one way if you live in the countryside.

to say is that he is a creative and extraordinary player, because he always dribbles

Opponents can only block his talent through fouls. He is really like a dancer on the
field. Actualy, Messi started his career in the old boys' team of Argentina, won

America again after 28 years. And even though he is full of honor, he is still very
modest and low-key. He still focuses on football itself. However, when others succeed,
they focus more on enjoying life.

part 3
1) What kinds of exercises do Chinese people like?
2) What characteristics do you think an athlete should have?
3) Why are there so few top athletes?
4) What's the best way to become a top athlete?

1. I reckon that ping-pong is in vogue in China, in that there are a multitude of

athletes who play this sport won a lot of medals in the Olympic games. People in
China invariably regard ping-pong as our nation ball, therefore, almost all people
especially the old will play ping-pong in their own community as an entertainment,
meanwhile they can cultivate the young generation.

2. Frankly speaking, I deem that a sportsman ought to have terrific skills so that
they have opportunities to win the champion. Also they should be equipped with
strong mind and willpower in that they might face some troubles such as injury or
mistakes. They won’t overcome these if they are vulnerable.

3. Owing to the reason that top players should not only be equipped with
professional skills, but also need strong mentality, which means that they have to
smoothly pull through barriers rather than be stuck in confusion. It’s
really tough for players to have both strong physical and psychological condition,
therefore that’s one of crucial reasons why there are few top sportsmen. Besides, the
training fee is quite high to be an outstanding athlete.

4. To be honest, apart from those who have fabulous talents, an experienced coach
will greatly exploit athletes’ potential, which means that sportsmen will enhance
themselves by proper training. Hence, I regard that the training
methods from professionals is the most fundamental way to be the best players at
first. Nevertheless, personal conditions are also crucial to be an outstanding athlete.

困难的决定

Part 2
Describe a difficult decision that you once made
You should say:
What the decision was
When you made your decision
How long it took to make the decision
And explain why it was difficult to make

I'm going to describe a difficult decision that I made last year. It is easy to say that
one student want to go abroad to study, but it is difficult to do so. Especially for a
Chinese student.language barrier is the biggest problem. At first, I said I'm going to
pass the Ielts test and get a good grades. However I I gave it up soon after learned
what the test is and how to assess their score. A sence of failure came to my mind.
And then I tried to find another replacement of it. For example, like duolingo. Maybe
it’s strange or something inside is about to change. I felt that I should take the ielts
exam. It was like a challenge for everyone.it all about limit testing.if you were brave
enough, you can win the battle. Therefore. I made up my mind immediately. I had to
do it, cause this was the little step I took. I still remember my mother’s words: don’t
rush into decisions, think it twice before you said it. But sometimes you have to make
decisions that you are not capable of, since this is how we find what we are.

Part 3
1) What decisions do people usually make in their daily lives?

Well, take me as an example. I mean, like, a thousand decisions everyday. For

example, what should I wear? Do I have to go to that place? Most of them are small
decisions. Sometime, when I have to make big decisions, like which school should I
apply? I often run to my parents for help.

2) Which is easier, making a decision by yourself or making a decision after group

discussion?

For extroverts like me, making decisions by myself is much easier. Cause I don’t even
care about others, just do what I want to do.but I do want to point out that introverts
might find group discussion is much easier. Cause they are hesitant about
everything.they desperately want help from others.

3) Why are many young people unwilling to follow their parents' advice?

That’s an interesting question, to answer it straight forward, because they deem

44

themselves as an adult in fact they’re still very young. And young generation tends to
believe they are the future of the whole world, they are capable of overturn the
stereotype.

4) Why would middle-aged people tend to second-guess their own decisions?

Frankly speaking, second-guess or think it twice is just an icon of adults.like a big

progress you made in the long run. Anyone who suffer a lot has a chance to think it
twice,it isn’t a privilege for middle-aged people.secondly, most of the time, we see
things in a certain angle.we can’t see a bigger picture.other words,we are blind
sometimes.so a second-guess might help us give an unbiased opinion.

有趣的外国人

part 2
Describe a foreign person who you have heard or known that you think is interesting
You should say:
Who the person is
How you knew him/her
What kind of person he/she is
And explain why you think he/she is interesting

Well, I would like to talk about Michael Jackson, who is the most interesting man I
have ever heard about. Michael Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and
dancer. Since my father is a fan of Michael, he often plays
Michael's songs at home. Therefore, I got to know him and started to listen to his
music when I was very young. At first, I was just interested on how he made his music,
his dance moves, how he was able to become the greatest entertainer in the world.
How did that journey go? To me it was really motivating that he went from being a
little kid in a 3 room house with 10 other people living there, to the world's superstar
Michael Jackson. And I truly got to know about his genius and how he saw the world,
which was truly amazing.
Then, as I got more into his life, I wanted an explanation for all the controversies
around him and what I found was even more amazing, though I have to say that I felt
ashamed for all my ignorance before I knew what I know today. While I learned
about his life I got that kind of knowledge that I though I'd never need. Seeing all the
malicious attacks he got during many years made me realize more about human
nature and reminded me what it means.
Seeing the way he faced everything, the positive message he brought to people and
how much he did for others, inspired me to want to be a better person, no matter
how good I think I already am. After all, Michael Jackson
taught me that it's all about LOVE.

part 3
1) Do you have any foreign friends and do you think having foreign friends is a good
way to know other countries?
2) Do you think it's important to know the culture and language before going to
another country?
3) What do you think of people who work in international companies?
4) What abilities do people need to have when working in an international
company?

1. Since I have been to many other countries, I do have many foreign friends. They
are all very kind to me and are willing to introduce me to some of their own culture.
So, I would say having foreign friends is a good way to know
their countries.

2. I think so. Different countries have different cultures and different traditions. We
should respect their own cultures and traditions, so it is important to know about
them before going abroad.

3. In my opinion, people who work in international companies are all from different
backgrounds. They might have different characteristics and different ways to do
things, but they all work towards the same company goal.

4. In my opinion, people who work in international companies must be

knowledgeable and open-minded. They need to know about different countries'
cultures and traditions, and should be respectful to them. Moreover, the ability to
cooperate is also important.

Part 2
Describe a habit your friend has and you want to develop

You should say:

Who your friend is
What habit he/she has
When you noticed this habit
And explain why you want to develop this habit

A good habit I hope I can develop is to keep recording life, which is a habit my
roommate has. When she goes out, she always brings a small camera. Even if she
doesn't bring the camera, she will use her mobile phone to record every interesting
and warm moment when we study, play, eat or go shopping together. From the first
31

day I knew her, I found that she is a person who likes to record life. When she meets
cute kittens and beautiful scenery, she always takes pictures with her mobile phone.
After a period of time, she will systematically sort out the videos and photos she has
taken, and clip the short video into a vlog. I think this is a good habit worth learning
from.
First of all, our pace of life is becoming faster and faster. We spend a lot of time in a
hurry. Happy and sad moments have no chance to be preserved. When we want to
recall in the future, we can only regret that there was no record at the beginning.
Secondly, recording life is also recording our own growth. The videos and photos can
help us better reflect on our problems in order to correct them. They can also let us
see what we have done well and
continue to strive to do better. Finally, videos and photos bearing traces of life can
also be sent to family and friends who are not accompanying with us, which can
become a good way to let them know our life state and reassure them.
So I am considering and choosing to buy a suitable camera to learn from my
roommate and form a good habit of recording life.

part 3
1) What habits should children have?
2) What should parents do to teach their children good habits?
3) What influences do children with bad habits have on other children?
4) Why do some habits change when people get older?

1. There are many habits that children need to cultivate. But they may not be able to
meet high requirements when they are young, so I think they can cultivate basic
habits first. For example, learn to do their own things by themselves, have a regular
life routine, be polite, pay attention to hygiene, and other living habits.

2. The most appropriate way to educate children to develop good habits is to set an
example for them. In childhood, the most common way for children to learn is
through imitation. Only when parents exercise self-discipline in life,
children will naturally learn these good habits. As the saying goes, children are a
mirror of their parents.

3. Children will imitate and learn from each other. If children with bad habits are very
active among their friends, they may let other children learn such bad habits. For
example, if a child likes to play outside every time after school and
doesn't go home in time, he may take other students with him together. Without the
company of parents and the supervision of teachers, these children's safety can't be
guaranteed and they are likely to encounter danger outside.

4. When people are old, one of the most common changes in their living habits is to
change from sleeping late and getting up late when they are young to going to bed
early and getting up early, which may be related to the changes in their physical

32
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

conditions brought about by age. Another habit that the old people around me
usually have is that they prefer to take photos to record their life when they are
getting older. I think on the one hand, the reason is that the camera function of
smart phones is becoming more and more comprehensive and convenient. On the
other hand, when people get old, they want to record the good life as much as
possible to help them recall these beautiful days in the future.

等待特殊事情

Part 2
Describe a time when you waited for something special that would happen
You should say:
What you waited for
Where you waited
Why it was special
And explain how you felt while you were waiting

Well, this topic reminds me of my trip to Northern Europe with my best friends
several years ago. During the trip, one of my friend, Jing , was really looking forward
to see aurora, so we decided to wait for it in a small town in Iceland no matter how
long it would took us. I think it was special to me because I never got to see it before,
not to mention seeing it with my best friends. In fact, most people do not have the
chance for a lifetime and I would probably cannot have a second chance either. So in
conclusion, we decided to spare no effort to take the chance.
There were three nights in a row, as I remembered, until we finally made it on the
last night. It was so cold in Iceland in January and I began to wonder why we were so
enchanted to aurora during the first two nights. Fortunately, we finally got to see it at
nearly 3 a.m. on the third night. Standing in wilderness and looking into the sky, the
aurora was so breathe-taking beautiful and so compelling that we even forgot how
frozen we were. Everything else has gone and there were just me, my friends and
aurora. We made so many quixotic wishes which never came true during the next
several years, but this shared experience warms me every time I think ofit.

Part 3
1) On what occasions do people usually need to wait?

In my opinion, I think people have to wait when there is no chance to do a thing at

the moment, or there are some obstacles to make it happen. For instance, some
people have to wait for a plate number in some first-tier cities such as Shanghai
because the government wants to limit transportation due to traffic concerns.

2) Who behave better when waiting, children or adults?

33
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

Definately adults, according to my observation. On one hand, adults are more patient
when waiting because we know there is nothing else we can do .By contrast, some
children would suppose they can get whatever they want by crying. On the other
hand, as an adult, one can make the waiting more fun, like chatting with others or
complete some work, which helps kill time.

3) Compared to the past, are people less patient now, why?

As for me , I think the reason for lacking patience is that everything is becoming more
and more convenient nowadays. In the past, if you wanted to look for some
references, you had to head to a library, search for like, 3 days, and finally got all your
references done. However, now you can just come to google or a digital-library,
which makes waiting seems stupid. As time passes, people would no longer willing to
wait for anything.

4) What are the positive and negative effects of waiting on society?

In my opinion, waiting is praiseworthy for the spare time it gives. As is well known,
everything was so fast these days that there is no time for us to spare at all. Yet
waiting for a table in a restaurant gives us a chance to chat with our family and
friends, or even a chance to perceive surroundings. However, as for negative effects,
waiting do harms our society, especially when there are some important or
necessary events. For instance, if a grandma needs a surgery to ease her from pain,
then waiting is no so good for her.

花费超过预期的物品

Part 2
Describe an item on which you spent more than expected
You should say:
What it is
How much you spent on it
Why you bought it
And explain why you think you spent more than expected

The first item comes into my mind is an espresso machine I bought last month. I
always wanted a espresso machine at home but I never got a chance to possess one ,
so when I moved into a new house last month, I decided to buy myself a espresso
machine as a gift. It cost me nearly one-third of my monthly wage, way beyond my
original budget.
During shopping, I didn’t go for an espresso machine at first. Instead, I was going to
get a capsule coffee maker, which is convenient because all you need to do is put a
coffee capsule in and press the button. But when the salesman made me a coffee
34

latte using an espresso machine, I fell for it. The coffee latte was smooth and rich,
with such a strong taste. I couldn’t help imagining me having a nice coffee and a
warm toast every morning, with sun shining and birds singing by my side. So I
decided to bought it with no second thought.
However, after using the machine for a month, I start to regret for buying it because
although it makes great coffee, I have no enough time for a cup of coffee every
morning. A quick capsule-coffee is perfect for me, which is much more cheaper. As a
consequence, the espresso machine not only cost me more money than expected,
but cost me more time as well.

Part 3
1) Do you often buy more than you expected?

Not really. I’m a disciplined person who have great self-control most of the time. Yet
now and then the consumerism trap may catch me when I’m depressed or having
extreme fun at the time. When I am really depressed, I need to buy me something
nice to make me happy. On the other hand ,when I am extremely happy, I would
forget things like budget concerns and just do whatever I want.

2) What do you think young people spend most of their money on?

I think young people are pouring dollars on things that can improve themselves, both
visible and invisible. For instance, they spend a lot on their appearance, such as
haircuts and clothes. Moreover, they also invest much in learning a different
language or in a new sport like boxing, trying to improve themselves.

3) Do you think it is important to save money? Why?

Of course. Having an awareness of saving money is a really important thing for

everyone, and especially for young people. Savings gives us opportunities to seize
new chances, which may lead us to a total different future. Moreover, savings
provides us with a strength to face the crisis and the challenges. Without savings, life
can be vulnerable and easy to collapse.

4) Do people buy things they don't need?

I think everyone does. People are not always rational, and when one becomes
emotional, he or she tends to have some irrational urges, which usually needs some
unnecessary things to fulfill. In my opinion, needless does not mean no benefit. In
fact, a chance to buy needless things usually give us new inspirations to change our
lives.

Part 2
Describe a person who impressed you most when you were in primary school
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
Why he/she impressed you most
And how you feel about him/her

I believe everyone has the luck to meet a helpful mentor as well as a good friend at
least once in their life. But I'm even luckier because my supporter worked not only as
a teacher but also as my fatherly role model. You might be wondering who he is. Well,
it's my first English teacher Mr. Yang in primary school, who helped me to learn in a
very vivid and interesting way.
Mr. Yang is a refined man with a decent manner who always wears a pair of glasses
and a white shirt. He‘s of medium height and I will never forget his big smile
whenever we encountered each other.
He's a true English aficionado who finished his undergrad degree in one of the best
language universities in China, and he had been teaching English for 40 years when
he retired. We had our first meeting when I was just 10. I was one hundred percent a
green hand in English at the time, but I was attracted by his native-like British accent,
so I made up my mind to learn English well at that moment.
Mr. Yang not only taught me how to learn English but also told me some interesting
stories about western countries. For example, he once told me a joke about when he
was in Britain and explained how to behave politely when being a guest in foreign
countries. Now that I'm older I feel grateful to him. It was because of him that I took
a great interest in English from the very beginning. And moreover, I was determined
to become a teacher just like him so that I too can inspire the younger generations.

Part 3
1) Why do people always miss their childhood?

As far as I’m concerned, everyone is enchanted to things in childhood because it is

the only interval during which we can be a total fool, concerning meaningless items
such as painting a unicorn or playing with sand. Also, light-hearted childhood
provides us with chances to dream and to believe. Children believe everything, from
Santa to Barbie, and they get real happiness in those beliefs.

2) Are kids happier than adults? Why?

I don’t think so. Of course children seem happier cause they have no worrisome.

36

However, if one could read his or her diary in 10, one may find the little person is also
vexed by a lot. There are different annoyance for different ages, and we cannot
determine whose annoyance is more painful. Adults have trifles, yet at the same
time children have their own troubles to deal with. So I think being a kid does not
mean being happier.

3) Why do people still remember many of their friends from primary school?

I think people usually remember old friends from primary school because those
friends are usually their first friends. Children do not got lots of chances to meet new
ones when they were too young and moreover, they do not have much rights to
decide whom to play with. Yet when they entered primary school, things change.
Everyone can choose a friend for himself, which is exciting and indelible.

4) What kinds of primary school teachers will impress students?

There are many kinds of teachers who impress students. First of all, student would
respect those who teach really well, as in other words, who are professional in their
area. At the same time ,students would also be grateful to meet a kind teacher, who
not only tell them right from wrong, but also treat every student equally without
discrimination. In one word, knowledge and high-minded are both necessary to be a
impressive and honorable teacher.

浪费时间的活动

Part 2
Describe an activity you usually do that wastes your time
You should say:
What it is
When you usually do it
Why you do it
And explain why you think it wastes your time

Well, life has become extremely fast and busy, and people often complain that they
are short on time, yet we waste a lot of time intentionally or unintentionally. Here I
would like to talk about an activity that I do regularly, and it wastes my hours
easily. The fact is that I am quite active on social media, which is more like a weed
these days. It is a more practical way to remain in touch with friends and relatives as
it saves a lot of time and energy when compared to meeting others personally. But
sometimes, I feel I waste too much time on this. Firstly, I have a huge network of
friends who are active on different apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter,
and others, and for their sake, I always have to remain active on these platforms. I
feel very bad because now I am kind of addicted to using these platforms. I can

utilize this time more productively than I waste here unduly. So, this is an activity that
I do regularly, which wastes a lot of time of mine.

Part 3
1) How do you balance life and work?
2) Will you continue doing something when you are aware that it's a waste of time?
3) What kinds of things make people feel pressured?
4) Why do some people refuse to abide by rules?

1) I think balancing work and life is always a work in progress. We are always doing
it, and it is not something specific. For example, if we go on vacation with the family,
we come back and spend extra time at work to make up for the pending work.
Another rather unhealthy way, we achieve it is by cutting down on our sleep hours,
but it takes a big toll on our mental and physical health.

2) I think the adage ‘bad habits die hard’ would be the best answer to this question.
I think we do such things because we are addicted to them. I think it’s very hard to
give up on such activities, and it requires a lot of willpower. However, the realization
that the activity is wasteful is the first step, and once people have that, it becomes
easier to stop.

3 ) I think there are millions of things in today’s life that stress us- for example,
financial obligations, unreasonable work deadlines, competition with others, and
maintaining relationships. The pressure each puts varies according to the stage of
life- for example, competition stress is in the early stages when we are trying to get
into universities or trying to secure a good job and financial stress comes a little later
when we have to manage the expenses for the whole family.

4) I think there is a certain thrill in breaking the rules and doing whatever we want.
In some ways, it is exhilarating and freeing to not care about the rules and
regulations. Actually, I think it is good as long as we don’t harm others because it
prevents life from becoming monotonous and boring.

难学的技能

Part 2
Describe a skill that was difficult for you to learn
You should say:
When you learned it
Why you learned it
How you learned it
How you felt when you learned it

38

Well, some skills are quite essential to learn but can be quite difficult to acquire.
Today I am going to talk about one such skill is driving, which I learned but found very
difficult. Actually, I had a great deal of fear on my mind towards driving. So that I
could gain confidence, my father got me enrolled at a driving school. Mr. Wang was
my driving instructor who was quite confident, friendly, and soft-spoken. On my first
day, he helped me to gain control over the steering. Though we were driving on the
ground with no vehicle around, I was still scared and trembling, but my instructor
motivated me to boost my confidence. Once I got on the highway, Frankly speaking,
every time a truck was coming from the other side, I was getting off the road in fear.
This time my trainer got a little angry with me and said, you must keep the courage if
you want to learn this skill. I learned a lot from my mistakes and the experience of Mr.
Wang, and today, I can confidently drive a car, but it was not an easy skill to acquire
for me.

Part 3
1) What skills do students need to master?
2) Is it hard for students to learn skills?
3) Is it hard for old people to learn new skills?
4) Is a good teacher very important for students' learning experience? Why?

1) Academically speaking, I think students need to master skills like reading, math,
and speaking. Non academically, I think skills like cooking, money management,
driving, and so on are skills that every student should possess. Also, in today’s world,
everyone should try to have computer skills.
2) On the contrary, I feel it is easier for them to pick up new skills as they are young,
and their minds can pick up and retain things better. That is why children are
encouraged to learn many things like driving, swimming, foreign languages at a
young age.
3)I wouldn’t say it is hard for them either. But it is not as easy as it is for children or
kids to pick up new things. Old people might not be able to remember things, so they
might need to do things repeatedly for them to pick up on skills.
4)Yes, absolutely. Teachers are not only responsible for teaching but also ensuring
that children are motivated to learn things. Moreover, nowadays, children are very
impatient and lose focus easily. If the teacher is not able to grab and hold on to their
attention, he would not be able to teach anything.

为家人感到骄傲的场合

Part 2
Describe a time when you felt proud of a family member
You should say:
When it happened
Who the person is

What the person did

And explain why you felt proud of him/her

Well, I always feel proud on my family, but here I would like to share the incident
when I was extremely proud on my brother, not just me, my entire family. Actually,
my brother Simon who is a sophomore, and he has a friend named Ryan who is quite
a brilliant student. Unfortunately, he comes from a poor family, and often his parents
find it difficult to pay his school fee, but last month his father had an accident, and
because of that, a lot of money went into his treatment for that reason, the parents
were unable to pay his school fee. The school management was quite unsympathetic,
and they issued a notice to Ryan that if the school fee is not paid on time, he would
not be allowed to sit in exams. But Simon told Ryan not to worry I will pay your
school fee. My brother who had been saving money to change his mobile phone,
which was really giving him a lot of trouble for almost 1 year time. Without thinking
twice, he paid the school fee for Ryan from his saved money. Now he made such a
huge sacrifice but didn’t even tell anyone, not even me. Some time ago, when Ryan
visited our house, he came with a flower bouquet to thank my brother, and during
this time, he revealed the entire story of how Simon helped him. I must say that my
father was especially proud on my brother because he always wanted to see his son
as a kind and generous person.
Overall, it was the time when my brother made us proud by helping someone in dire
need.

Part 3
1) When would parents feel proud of their children?
2) Should parents reward children? Why and how?
3) Is it good to reward children too often? Why?
4) On what occasions would adults be proud of themselves?

1) Parents feel proud of their children when they meet and achieve their goals. It can
be getting good grades in school, getting into the sports team, graduating from
college, and getting their first job, etc. For younger children parents are proud when
they achieve tiny milestones like saying their first word, taking their first step, tying
their shoelaces by themselves, etc.

2) Yes, parents should reward children for their achievements and hard work. It
encourages them to continue doing it and makes them feel good about them
themselves. Instead of giving material goods as rewards, parents should reward
children by praising them, letting them do a favourite activity, or spending more time
with them.

3) I don’t think parents should reward children too often as it can make them feel
entitled. Buying them toys, gadgets as rewards can make them materialistic. Younger

kids may become too focused on the reward and forget about the reason they are
being rewarded for. They can even start negotiating with parents for every small task
they do.

4) Adults have many occasions when they are proud of themselves, like a promotion
at their job, buying their first home, getting their children into good schools, doing
social work like helping others or a friend in need, etc.

搬到新家/新学校

Part 2
Describe a time when you moved to a new home/school
You should say:
When you moved
Where you moved
Why you moved
And how you felt about it

Well, these days, it is quite common to see people moving from one pace to the
other for different reasons. I, too, had experienced the same thing when I was in 8th
grade. Actually, earlier we used to live in a village in a joint family with my
grandparents and uncles and aunts. The experience of being together was amazing,
and the peaceful life of a village away from the hustle and bustle of cities cannot be
explained in words. However, my family decided to move to the city for my higher
studies and a better future. It was not easy for all of us to leave our ancestor’s house
to live separately in a city where nobody knew us. Although we initially missed our
family and village house a lot slowly and steadily, we got used to city life, especially
visiting shopping malls, cafes, parks, playing in grounds, studying in libraries, and
others.

Part 3
1) Why do people move to a new home?
2) What problems will people face after moving to a new place?
3) How do people solve these problems?
4) Is it good to move to a new place frequently? Why?

1) There are many reasons why people move to a new home. But, most commonly,
people move for job, education. In other words, people move when they get a job or
join an educational institute, which is too far for them to commute daily. Another big
reason is marriage or because of children. This is because either they want
independence and privacy or because their earlier house might be too small to
41

accommodate the growing family.

2) How do people solve these problems? I think it depends upon the place they are
moving to. For example, if they are moving to a new place with a different culture,
they might face a culture shock. Another problem is getting to know neighbours and
making new friends. People solve these problems by having a housewarming party to
invite new neighbours and get to know them.
3) It is comfortable to live in the same place for a long time. As people are familiar
with everything, they don’t need to spend time setting up things again and again. On
the other hand, it gets boring and monotonous to live in the same place.
4)I don’t think it is good to move to a new place too frequently. Firstly, it might be
challenging to do so financially. Moving involves a lot of expenses. Secondly, it might
be difficult to make new friends and people might miss their old place. Finally, from a
children’s point of view, it can be disastrous as it would affect their educational
continuity.

一件困难的事情

Part 2
Describe a difficult thing you did
You should say:
What it was
How you did/completed it
Why it was difficult
And how you felt about doing it

Well, I have done many things in my life which I found difficult in the beginning, but
then with practice, they became easy. For example, I found cooking to be very
difficult at first, but now I can cook anything easily by just following the recipe. But
one challenging thing I would like to talk about today is when I assembled my own
personal computer two years back. It was after my exams were over and I had
requested my parents for a new desktop. All my friends had bought branded
Personal Computers from Dell and HP, which came pre-installed with all the software.
However, being a gamer, I was more interested in getting a gaming computer with a
more powerful configuration but buying a branded gaming PC was out of my budget.
So, I discussed it with one of my techie friends, and he advised me to buy the
computer parts separately and assemble it on my own, as it would cost much less
than a branded PC. Since I did not have much knowledge about computer hardware
at that time, it seemed very difficult to me to do this task on my own. But I still
decided to go ahead and started reading a book on computer hardware and also
started to watch computer assembly videos on Youtube, which gave me a lot of
confidence. Through the videos, I learnt a lot about the different computer parts and
their functioning. Finally, after I gained enough confidence, I ordered all the
components online as it was much cheaper than the retail shops. It took me a
42

complete day to put all the parts together, and basically, the most difficult part was
building the CPU. One has to be very careful while installing the processor on the
motherboard and then installing cooling fans over it. If this process is not done
carefully it could lead to a short circuit, and the processor could get damaged. Luckily,
I was able to put it all together perfectly in my first attempt and when I pressed the
power button, I heaved a sigh of relief. I was very nervous during the entire assembly
process, but I also felt that if I hadn’t read the hardware book and watched the
videos on Youtube, I would not have been able to do this thing on my own.

Part 3
1) What kinds of jobs require people to be confident?
2) On what occasions should children be encouraged? How?
3) How do you help children stay focused?
4) What challenges do young people face today?

I think all jobs require a certain degree of confidence but the ones which involve
dealing with customers require a lot more confidence. For example, if a salesperson
is not confident enough, then he will not be able to convince the customers about
the product he/she is trying to sell.

2 ) I think children should be encouraged in those situations where they feel hesitant
in doing something that is good for them. But also, the encouragement should be
done to a certain limit, they should not feel like something is being forced upon them.
For example, we can encourage children to learn something creative such as painting
if they show interest in it. And to encourage them more, parents can take them to a
museum so they can develop their interest further.

There are many ways in which children can be helped. First of all, one can provide
them an environment which is free of distractions, like when they are studying, they
should not be allowed to use cellphones. Another way to help them focus would be
to teach them about meditation, in which they have to focus on their breath or a
single sound.

4) Well, I think there are two main challenges that young people face these days. The
first one is related to the mind and mental health. Nowadays everyone is aware of
the rise in depression and suicide cases among the youth. Another challenge faced
by them is the ever-increasing competition in education or their professional lives.

有兴趣学习或改进的东西

Part 2
Describe something that you are interested to learn or improve
You should say:
43
扫码添加小助手微信领取更多资料

What it is
How you will learn or improve it
Why you are interested in it
And explain how you feel about learning it

I have a long desire to learn how to play the piano. Even after my desire and passion,
I have not been able to learn it. If I ever get the time and opportunity to learn it, I
would grab the chance.

I am not sure exactly when this passion grew in me, but I can guess it was something
that came in my mind after I saw a foreign movie where an actor played this
instrument. The movie was related to a musician's life and he mostly played the
piano and sang songs.

In the movie, the actor played the piano 3-4 times and the quality of the music was
really good. Possibly from that time, the passion started to grow in my mind. I work
as a computer programmer and have no intention to do any serious type of music,
but I want to learn to play the piano. If I get spare time and my schedule allows me, I
will get admitted in a piano lesson in my city. Not many opportunities are there but I
heard that there are 2/3 musicians who teach enthusiast people the piano for a high
payment. I will probably get admitted to such a program and would keep learning.

I will need to save around $1000 to get admitted into the piano lesson and hopefully
will have this amount at the end of next year. Then I will talk to the musicians who
offer the lesson and would pick one to learn from. I'll allow me to be free at least 2
days in a week to participate in the lesson and I would practice at least for an hour
daily. I know it takes a great determination, passion and talent to learn a creative
thing like piano, but I believe, I will be able to achieve it.

Part 3
1) Is it hard for adults to continue learning? Why?
2) Is it the government's responsibility to assist people to learn?
3) What are the differences between education in the past and now?
4) What are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning?

1) Yes, I believe it’s not easy for adults to continue learning, there are several
reasons for it, one is adults have less productivity comparing to young learners as
they focus more on works and others, the other one is adults don’t have as
much time as youngsters who have a bunch of that in learning.
2) In my mind, it’s vital for government to help with learning, especially for those
who may not able to afford the cost if there is no help from government. The reason
I support this opinion is that educating the citizen would bring long-term benefits
such as making a country stronger and more competitive.

44

3) To my experience, the first thing is students are no longer intimidated by teacher

since they are more role model and friendship based. What’s more, there are lots of
study material in electronic form, education now tends to depend on laptop, e-books
and so on.
4) One advantage is students can pursue a job along with studies, especially for
them who don’t want to give up their jobs. While there are chances of distraction as
people are less motivated and focused on their assignments for a long time.
