The Speech Therapist is sometimes called an

S-L-P

You can call her those letters, there are only

The S is for SPEECH:

How you pronounce the sounds in each word

Like can you say /s/, or /g/, or /er/?

Do you switch these sounds out

for easier ones?

Do you know where each sound

Is made on your tongue?

Speech is also for sounds

that get stuck on the way out

Even when you know

what you want to talk about.

…and Speech is for VOICE

-  your loudness and pitch

Can you change your voice

in the ways that you wish?

Can you speak really high

and can you speak really low?

Can you speak in the right voice

for wherever you go?

The L is for LANGUAGE,

which is the pattern we use

To get thoughts in our brains

from the words others choose

It's the way you understand

what people are saying

and can follow directions

for working or playing

Language also includes

another great skill

and say what you will

Knowing what words mean

and how they go together

The SLP helps

many kids do this better

Language is also

saying the right kinds of thoughts

To make and keep friends

In ways that aren't often taught

The P is for Pathologist - a big long word

It kind of means "therapist,” (which doesn't sound as absurd)

It doesn't mean teacher - we don't do what they do

We don't teach classes or give out grades to you

but we do work in schools with students old and new

and just like your teachers, we love helping kids too!
