Text one is a letter, published in 1998 by BBC news.


“Letter to Daniel” is a realistic text which stimulates an emotional reaction in
the reader. It is a personal letter to daniel from his father expressing why he is
so protective of daniel and tells him how he wants to protect him from a world
full of distress and injustice. As the letter was published in the BBC news, it
clearly makes a private letter public. By doing this the writer aims to enlighten
both his son as well as the readers of the text. The author aims that the
people should do everything to protect the precious lives of their children.
First and foremost This letter is written in the first and second person
narrative to express the intense emotions and happiness of the writer. As the
writer states in line 14 “Your coming has turned me upside down and inside
out,” His son, To whom the letter is directed, will one day be able to read and
appreciate these emotions, just as every parent who reads this letter in the
newspaper in 1998 can appreciate. The writer connects the second person
“you” to the first person “i” to explain the fierce protectiveness that he now
feels for his son daniel expressing after all the horrible things that he has
experienced as a war correspondence
