LESSON PLAN

Class: 10 G
Number of students: 21
Textbook: New Opportunities Elementary
Unit: 10. Cultures
Lesson: 12. Mali Music
Level: elementary
Aims: (by the end of the lesson, students will be able to):
-practise using the Present Simple and the Present Continuous
-read sentences and be able to order them while viewing the activities.
-talk about things they are doing at the present.
-differentiate the uses of the tenses.
Language Focus: vocabulary/formation rules for the present continuous.
Timetable Fit:
 In the previous lesson, the students have learnt about holidays and
how to write a postcard.
 In the next lesson, pupils will talk about life in the UK.
Aids: textbook, blackboard, cassette, cassette player, handouts, video-projector,
Anticipated Problems: Some students may not understand at first the difference
between tenses due to the fact that they are used to only one present tense, therefore this
distinction might be hard to understand.
Solution to the anticipated problem: Ss need a lot of awareness-raising activities and
meaningful practice where the choice of the form depends on the context.
Assumptions: The Ss already handle a satisfying level of language in order to
accomplish the requests of the lesson.

PROCEDURE
Time Stages Interaction
3’ 1) Warm-up: T-Ss
T gets Ss familiarized with the Present continuous.
The T makes a few commands and then writes the
progressive form on the bb.
E.g.: ‘Gabriel, stand up, please!’ – You are standing.
T elicits the today’s lesson: Present Continuous.
7’ 2)Lead-in: T-Ss
T asks a student to come to the blackboard and
conjugate the auxiliary “to be”.
3) Presentation
T explains the rules of the tense and gives examples
making use of the auxiliary written on the bb.
20’ 4) Practice activity: T-Ss
‘What are you hearing?’ Pw
Ss listen to a few sound effects and guess the sounds.
Iw
Ss write, in pairs, sentences after each track using
present continuous.
E.g.: The clock is ticking.
Ss do ex. 4 and 5 from page 76.
T-Ss
Ss watch a Mr. Bean video and receive a worksheet Pw
where they have to order the activities as they see in
the video while viewing it.

T explains the negatives and the interrogatives on the T-Ss

same worksheet. I-w
Ss do exercises 6 and 7 from page 77, thus practising
both the newly-taught tense and the present simple.
15’ 5) Feedback: Ss-Ss
Ss play mime. Gw
‘Guess what I am doing.’ Ss split into two teams.
One player from team A (and then B) comes to the
front of the class and draws a card. Then the player
tries to mime the present continuous sentence written
on the card to his/her team. If the team cannot guess,
the player can give clues that are written on the card.
If the team guesses the sentence within two minutes,
they win a point. The winner is the team with the
highest number of points at the end of the game.
3’ 6) Home assignment: T-Ss
Imagine you are on holiday in a great location. You
are sitting in a café and there’s a lot going on. Write
a text message to someone back home telling them
what’s happening around you. Include descriptions
of the weather, the people you can see, the food, the
drink, etc.
2’ 7) Evaluation T-Ss
Teacher evaluates the level of satisfaction,
participation and cooperation of the students.
