N3700 Installation and Setup Instructions


Below is a copy of the system setup worksheet used to gather the
information required to complete the setup script. If a worksheet has not
yet been completed, remove this page and ask the customer to complete
the worksheet before unpacking the system unit.

This document provides installation and setup instructions for the IBM System
StorageTM N3700 storage system. Additional information about this product can
be found in the IBM System Storage N3700 Hardware and Service Guide. This
document also includes setup instructions for any expansion units that you may
be installing.

documentation that came with this system. Do not plug any cables into the
system, adapters, or any electrical outlets until you have reviewed the safety
information and followed the procedures in this document.

1 Unpacking the N3700 (system unit)
Important:
If your system unit was shipped already assembled and cabled in a rack,
go directly to Step 8, "Setting up and booting the system" on page 13.

Caution: Use safe practices when lifting.


DANGER: The N3700 unit is extremely heavy. To avoid injuring yourself or
damaging the N3700, you must work with at least two other people when
you install the N3700 in the rack.

1.2 Remove the system unit and its tray using the handles built into the
cardboard tray. Place the system unit and tray on a table.

1.3 Remove the top portion of the plastic surrounding the system unit.

2 Installing the rails in an IBM 19-inch rack

Note: Read this document in its entirety before proceeding.

Note: It is recommended that the N3700 be placed in the lowest


position available in a rack. For example:

2.1 Loosen (but do not remove) the four rail adjustment screws on each rail.

2.2 Using the figure on the next page for reference, at the front of the rack,
position the right-hand rail into the rack at the appropriate EIA location
(make sure that the two locating pins seat properly). The bottom of the
rail should line up with the bottom EIA boundary.

Note: When installed, each N3700 unit will occupy a 3U space.

Using two silver pan head M5 screws, attach the rail to the front of the
rack using holes H3 and H7. Tighten these screws with a screwdriver.

2.3 At the rear of the rack, position the rail at the same EIA location used in
step 2.2 (make sure that the locating pins seat properly). Using two silver
pan-head M5 screws, attach the rail to the rack using holes H2 and H8.
Tighten these screws with a screwdriver.

2.4 Tighten the four rail-adjustment screws on the installed rail.

2.5 Repeat steps 2.2 through 2.4 for the left-hand rail.

2.6 Repeat steps 2.1 through 2.5 if installing a second N3700.

3 Installing the N3700 in the rack

DANGER: The N3700 is extremely heavy. To avoid injuring yourself or
damaging the N3700, you must work with at least two other people when
you install the N3700 in the rack.

3.1 From the front of the rack, place the N3700 onto the rails and slide it in
until the front mounting bracket of the N3700 is flush with the frame rails
of the rack.

3.2 At the front of the rack, using four black hex-head M5 screws in the H2
and H8 holes, secure the system unit to the rack by threading the screws
through the system unit bracket and the rack frame rail into the threaded
rail nuts. Tighten the screws using the 7mm nut driver.

3.3 From the rear of the rack, use two silver pan-head M5 screws to attach
the rear of the chassis to the rails, as shown below.

3.4 Any expansion units should be installed. Verify that all shelf IDs and
speed switches are set correctly. Refer to the Installation and Setup
Instructions for the N series expansion unit to which you are connecting.

4 Cabling the N3700
Note: When cabling the dual-controller N3700, the upper (node A)
controller (2nd in a dual-controller model) is installed in the opposite
orientation of the lower (node B) controller.

4.1 Set the shelf ID on the N3700 to 1.

4.2 Make sure that the 1Gb/2Gb switch is set to the 1Gb position.

4.3 Connect the N3700 to the network by plugging the Ethernet cable into
the 10/100/1000 Ethernet input connection.

4.4 Connect a console to the controller using your DB-9 to RJ-45 console
adapter cable.

Note: To configure your console, refer to "Connecting your appliance to


an ASCII terminal console" in the N3700 Hardware and Service Guide.

4.5 Install an SFP module. Then plug the Fibre Channel terminator into Fibre
Channel C port on the controller (CPU module).

Note: If you are attaching a third-party device, such as a tape backup or


FC switch, refer to "Connecting to third-party devices" in the N3700
Hardware and Service Guide for details.

Note: Illustrations in this document show storage
system connections to EXN2000 or EXN4000
expansion units. On EXN1000 expansion units, the 4.5 4.4
positions of the In and Out ports are reversed from
those of the EXN2000 and EXN4000. 4.3

4.6 If you have a dual-controller N3700 (two CPU modules), repeat Steps 4.3
through 4.5 for the second CPU module.

4.7 If you are not adding expansion units, use a small pointed tool to set the
termination switch on the CPU module(s) to On and go to Step 7,
"Installing the power cables" on page 12.

If you are adding expansion unit(s) to your system, use a small pointed
tool to set the termination switch on the CPU module(s) to Off and go to
Step 5, "Cabling the expansion unit" on page 10.

5 Cabling the expansion unit
Note: Optical cables require the use of SFP modules shipped with the
expansion unit(s).

5.1 a. Cable the Fibre Channel port B on Node B (lower controller of N3700)
to the expansion unit controller B module Input port.

b. For dual-controller N3700 models, cable the Fibre Channel port B on


Node A (upper controller of N3700) to the expansion unit controller A
module Input port.

Make sure that the cables are secure.

5.2 Set each of the expansion unit IDs to 2, 3, or 4, depending on the number
of expansion units in your system and their location. See the figure below.

5.3 For additional expansion units, cable the first expansion unit (ID=2)
controller A Output port to the second expansion unit (ID=3) controller A
Input port. Repeat as necessary to attach a third expansion unit (ID=4) to
the second expansion unit (ID=3).

Cable the first expansion unit (ID=2) controller B Output port to the
second expansion unit (ID=3) controller B Input port. Repeat as
necessary to attach a third expansion unit (ID=4) to the second
expansion unit (ID=3).
Make sure that the cables are secure.
5.4 Make sure that all expansion unit 1Gb/2Gb switches are set to the 1Gb
position. If necessary, refer to the documents that came with the
expansion unit for information about checking and/or setting the switch.

6 Grounding the N3700
Note: For proper grounding, you must fasten your N3700 to any
expansion unit(s) that you may be installing. Use the provided braided
copper grounding cables and screws (may be in the rail kit).

6.1 Using the grounding kit, fasten the lug at one end of the 0.25m
grounding cable to one of the two threaded inserts (adjacent to the
power supply receptacles as indicated by a ground symbol) at the
back of the N3700 using the M5 x 0.5-inch screw.

6.2 If only one expansion unit needs to be grounded, use the provided M5
x0.5-inch shelf screw to connect the grounding cable from the N3700 to
the threaded hole adjacent to the power supply receptacle on the
expansion unit and go to Step 7, "Installing the power cables" on page 12.

If more than one expansion unit needs to be grounded, continue


attaching the grounding cables from unit to unit, overlaying the hole on
one end of the grounding cable from one to the next.

7 Installing the power cables

7.1 Make sure all power supply switches on the N3700 and any attached
expansion unit(s) are in the Off position.

7.2 Connect the power cords to all power supply 1 and power supply 2
power receptacles for all system units that are being installed by holding
the wire clamp up, plugging in the power cord, and lowering the clamp to
secure the power cord.

7.3 Connect the power cords to the power sources, making sure that the
power supplies on the left side of the system are connected to a separate
AC source than the power supplies on the right side of the system. This
ensures redundant power.

Caution: Do not power on the system at this time.

8 Setting up and booting the system

8.1 To set up your system you must complete the following steps:

a. Make sure the "System setup worksheet" has been completed and
available for use in the following steps.
b. If you have a dual-controller N3700, read "Configuring the N3700
storage system" in the N3700 Hardware and Service Guide, and then
assign disks to each node, using the "Disk ownership worksheet" in
the N3700 Hardware and Service Guide.

8.2 Check that the expansion unit IDs and terminate switches are properly
set. Also, make sure that the system is properly grounded.

8.3 Start a console session for each controller. Then turn on the power first to
the expansion unit(s), if present, and then to the N3700. The system
begins to boot, and then it stops at the first installation question, which is
displayed on the console windows:

Please enter the new hostname [ ]:

8.4 Go to the system console for each controller and answer the installation
questions for that controller, using the information recorded in the
"System setup worksheet" from the N3700 Hardware and Service Guide.

Note: You will be asked to continue setup through the Web interface. If
you select No, you will continue setup through the command line
interface. If you select Yes you can log in to the N3700 using the IP
address specified earlier in the setup or you can continue through the
command line interface. Refer to the Data ONTAP Software Setup Guide
for your version of Data ONTAP for more information about choosing a
setup method.

Note: When you encounter the time zone question, you can press Enter
to accept the default setting, if you do not know how to set the time zone.
You can then set the time zone after you complete initial setup. See the
Timezone Man page at the system prompt or access it through the
FilerView interface.

8.5 For the single-controller N3700, assign all the disks to the system by
entering the following at the command line interface prompt:

disk assign all

For the dual-controller N3700, assign disks to the proper controller by


completing the following steps, using the Disk ownership worksheet:

a. Determine disk ownership by entering the following


command:

disk show -v

b. Assign the disk or disks to this controller by entering


the following command:

disk assign 0b.NN

where 0b.NN is the disk ID to assign.

8.6 Check the licenses on the controller(s) by entering the following


command:

license

Add any missing licenses by entering the following command for each
missing license:

license add xxxx

where xxxx is the license code for the product.

Note: Clustering must be licensed on both controllers in a dual-controller


N3700.

8.7 Reboot the controller(s) by entering the following command:

reboot

Initial setup is now complete for a single-controller N3700. Refer to


the Data ONTAP Software Setup Guide for your version of Data
ONTAP to verify that the system is set up correctly and ready to
operate. To complete initial setup of a dual-controller N3700,
continue to Step 8.8.

8.8 Enable clustering by entering the following command on one controller's
console:

cf enable

8.9 Check each controller's status by entering the following command:

cf status

8.10 Test takeover and giveback on each controller by completing the


following steps:

a. Initiate takeover by entering the following command:

cf takeover

Result: Takeover succeeds. If not, verify that the network settings are
correct on each node. Also verify that the same features are licensed on
each node, and that the cluster is enabled on both nodes. Fix any errors,
reboot, and try again. If the problem persists, contact IBM support.

b. Check the status by entering the following command:

cf status

c. Give back the controller by entering the following command:

cf giveback

d. Check the status of the cluster by entering the following command:

cf status

Initial setup is now complete for a dual-controller N3700. Refer to


the Data ONTAP Software Setup Guide for your version of Data
ONTAP to verify that the system is set up correctly and ready to
operate.
