Mr. Rogers provided all the necessary finances for consultants, an artist, and a recording studio, and most of all believed in our capabilities. Dr. Iman Aziz Soliman, educational consultant and book planning expert, who used her skills and experience to help in designing and guiding the work. Mohamed Amer, project manager, who edited the work and added in the pronunciation slot in each chapter. Hoda Adeeb, director of studies at the International Language Institute, for sharing her opinions, grammatical analysis, and for providing teacher support in editing and recording. The International Language Institute teaching staff for recording and pioneering the book in class and giving their constructive feedback and suggestions. Our administrative staff Zeinab El Ghazaly, head of reception, who typed the manuscript and Dalia Abou El Ezz, who helped edit the work on computer. Elaine Hermina helped oversee the administrative work. Nessim Guirges, the artist, for all his effort in making the illustrations so helpful as a teaching aid. « make daily transactions and use money and numbers in daily purchases * talk about their daily routine and about their plans for the future * give simple narrations about their trips and past life « make requests and offer simple apologies + express their likes and dislikes and talk about their abilities * talk about their feelings when they are ill * talk about their personal possessions Introduction Kallimni ‘Arabi is part of a planned series of multi-level Egyptian Colloquial Arabic course books for adults. It combines rich everyday cultural content, comprehensive grammar, and real-life functional language. It is designed according to the guidelines for teaching and learning Arabic of the American Council for Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTEL). This book covers the Novice High and Intermediate Low levels of language proficiency set by the ACTFL. Chapters 1-5 address the needs of Novice High students when communicating aurally in a number of survival situations; it recycles everyday vocabulary and progressively builds and enforces students’ knowledge of sentence structure through presentations and practices that focus on real-life situations. Chapters 6-10 are aimed at Intermediate level students, helping them communicate aurally and allowing for progressive acquisition of vocabulary and sentence structure through a number of interactive classroom tasks and everyday situations. This volume covers the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with particular emphasis on listening and speaking. Students using this course book should already be able to read and write some Arabic, having studied around thirty hours of a beginners’ Egyptian Colloquial Arabic class or around eighty hours of a Modern Standard Arabic program. By the end of this course students should be able to: * introduce themselves and ask people for their personal information * use polite greetings * respond and initiate conversations + ask about things they do not know and describe people and things they know * ask for and give instructions and directions book. The recorded material also includes language presentations, the language points (points of grammar and expressions), pronunciation drills, and listening activities as well as reading texts. A variety of native speaking voices are used to enrich the students’ exposure to the spoken language in its natural context. Listening Texts The written texts for the listening material are written in Arabic and presented as a part of the practice section in each presention. Methodology Kallimni ‘Arabi covers sixty classroom teaching hours. The teacher is free to use the practices in the Real Life or Remember sections according to student needs and classroom time constraints. The book is designed in such a way as to allow the teacher to structure the lessons as needed. However, since the vocabulary and grammar are used cumulatively throughout the units, it is recommended to follow the sequence in which the lessons are ordered in the book. Structure Kallimni ‘Arabi consists of ten modules with a revision unit at the end of every five modules. Each module is structured as follows: Presentation New language points and yocabulary are presented in context through listening or speaking, to highlight form, use, and pronunciation. Practice Each presentation is followed by a number of exercise types which offer controlled and freer activities, often involving all four skills. Real Life A skill-based section in which the student participates in a number of learning tasks that simulate real-life situations. The aim is to use the vocabulary and structure that the student learned in the module. Remember A section providing a quick overview of all the language points taught in each module. Kallimni ‘Arabi also includes the following: Glossary Using illustrations, the book presents the necessary vocabulary for each function and presentation within each module. Also, at the end of the book there is an Arabic/English glossary of the vocabulary used in each module. CDs Listening texts are recorded as mp3 files on a cp for cis and personal use. a a a ee ee % Ag’ dong Skills ening Speaking Reading Writing log about greetings and oducing oneself.
