Test Method
Test Procedure:
A “tensile test machine” (Instron Model 1122 or equivalent) with a chart recorder feature and
appropriate grips shall be used to pull the connector/cable assembly until failure. Five (5)
samples shall be prepared using six-inch lengths of appropriate coaxial cable. A connector shall
be installed per manufacturer specifications on one end of the cable and the other end shall
remain free. Affix the test sample between the crosshead and the base of the test stand using
an “F” adapter for the connector and standard grips for the cable. Make sure that the connector
is torque to manufacturer specifications. Zero out equipment and insure that it is set-up for
required deflection and force measurements. If the tensile test machine has a “Max Hold”
indicator, it shall be utilized to record the maximum, average, and standard deviation of the pull
out force. The cable assembly shall be pulled at a rate of 2 inches per minute until failure.
NOTE: Pull force testing will be done using manufacturer’s recommended preparation steps and
non-standard preparation method, if applicable. This test will be performed on samples at room
temperature, and samples just removed from a temperature chamber at –40°C and samples just
removed from a temperature chamber at 60° C.

Results: All samples had less than 10 mΩ of resistance. This indicates superior contact between
the connector and the cable.
Test Method
Procedure:
Use a 75-ohm network analyzer with a transmission/reflection or S-parameter test set and
interconnecting adapters and cables. The analyzer must be capable of transforming frequency
domain data to the time domain and time domain data to the frequency domain and of selecting
a section of the time domain response. Set the analyzer to measure a return loss measurement.
Set the start frequency to 2.5MHz: Set the stop frequency to 1005 MHz, set the number of points
to 1601. Perform a one port calibration to cancel out interconnecting adapters and cables using
precision calibration standards.
Measure the return loss of a two-foot length of 75-ohm coax distribution cable containing a splice
assembly consisting of an F-81 barrel splice and terminated in 75 ohms. Convert this frequency
response to the time domain, establish a time window (gate) wide enough to include only the
connector splice, and convert this “time domain gated” response back to the frequency domain.
The gated frequency domain response is the return loss of the connector splice.
Record the worst case return loss and frequency as well as the return loss at the following
frequencies: 5 MHz, 15 MHz, 30 MHz, 40 MHz, 45 MHz, 54 MHz, 120 MHz, 200 MHz, 300 MHz,
450 MHz, 550 MHz, 750 MHz, 870 MHz, and 1002 MHz. Further, include the Directivity value of
the measurement system
Optional - Repeat the return loss measurement at all frequencies from 1002.5MHz to 2002.5 MHz
and 2000 MHz to 3002.5 MHz.

Use a 75-ohm network analyzer with a transmission/reflection S-parameter test set and
interconnecting adapters and cables. Set the analyzer to measure the attenuation. Set the start
frequency to 2.5MHz: Set the stop frequency to 1005 MHz, set the number of points to 1601.
Perform a forward transmission calibrate to cancel out interconnecting adapters and cables using
precision calibration standards.
Measure and store the attenuation of the 100-foot length cable. It may be necessary to use a
“smoothing aperture” of up to 20% of the frequency span to smooth random and period
variations in the response due to cable imperfections. The cable shall then be cut at its midpoint
and spliced using an F-81 barrel connector. Measure the attenuation of the cable with splice
assembly. The insertion loss of the splice assembly is the vector difference of these two
measurements.
Optional - Repeat the attenuation measurement at all frequencies from 1002.5MHz to 2002.5
MHz and 2000 MHz to 3002.5 MHz.

Test Method
Procedure:
The test was performed using the GTEM test outlined in the newest version of ANSI/SCTE 48-3
2004. The physical setup and testing procedure shall follow the techniques outlined in the
document. The GTEM cell must be EMCO, Lungrund or equivalent. It shall have enough volume
so to accommodate the UUT signal generator. An adequate test volume is defined as the volume
inside the test chamber over which the E-field strength variation measures less than 2 dB.
The shielding effectiveness shall be measured using samples prepared in the following ways: the
manufacturer required minimum torque specification, 20 in-lbs and tightened only with fingers.

Test Method
Procedure:
Two-foot long sections of coaxial drop cable shall be prepared at one end following the connector
manufacturer’s specifications. An F-81 drop splice shall be mated to the connector using the
manufacturer required minimum torque specification, 20 in-lbs and tightened only with fingers.
The test shall be performed with F-81 barrel splices both with port seals AND without. The free
end of the F-81 barrel shall be properly sealed using a sealing sleeve, nut seal used with a
terminator, or a threaded cap. Caution shall be used when selecting and installing the sealing
device so to avoid introducing another leak point into the test. The sealed F-81 shall be tested
before and after the dye test for its ability to withstand an internal pressure of 10 psi (any failure
will disqualify results). The liquid penetrant shall be a solution of one gram of Phenol red (ASC
reagent, CAS #143-74-8) dye to 3.875 liters of distilled or deionized water. To achieve a rose
colored solution, add drops of one molar sodium hydroxide until the solution turns red.
Insert the end of the test sample with the connector and sealed interface into a container (6”W x
12”L x 6”D) and fill the container with the liquid penetrant to completely submerge the test end
of the specimens. As evaporation of the penetrant solution occurs, distilled water should be
added daily to ensure that the specimen is completely submerged. Support the free end of the
sample above the container using a ring stand or other suitable method.
The chamber shall be temperature cycled 10 times from 35-degrees Fahrenheit to 140-degrees
Fahrenheit. Each cycle shall last 12 hours. Time to achieve upper and lower limits from room
temperature shall be 20-40 minutes and the chamber shall dwell at the upper limits for a period
of 300 20 minutes.
After completion of the test, samples shall be removed and let air dry. Oven drying is acceptable
at a temperature of 86 1.8-degrees Fahrenheit for up to one hour.

Procedure:
Samples shall be prepared with a two-foot length of 75-ohm coax cable containing a splice
assembly consisting of an F-81 barrel splice and terminated in 75 ohms. Connecting barrel and
the cable ends adequately capped during this test. Some samples shall be prepared using
connecting barrels with port seals and others shall be prepared using connector barrels without
port seals. The end-to-end DC resistance of the outer conductor of the cable connector splice
assembly shall be measured and recorded at room temperature prior to exposure. The four-wire
resistance measurement method shall be used with a maximum source voltage of 20 mV. The
samples shall be exposed to a salt spray for a period of 336 hours (14 days). After removal,
drying and stabilization of the samples a thorough inspection for any dissimilar metal corrosion,
metal corrosion or salt incursion will be conducted and noted. The samples shall be inspected for
evidence of surface degradation using 10X magnification. Photographs of each sample should be
taken both PRIOR to AND AFTER any rinsing to remove the salt build-up. Each sample will be
rated for surface survival using the following:
