The first train in India ran thirty four kilometers from Bori Bunder (Bombay), to Thane on 16 April 1853 and was nationalized in 1951. It is well known that Indian Railway is considered to be the fourth largest railway in the world, which carries 8.4 billion passengers and 1212.3 million tonnes of freight every year. In such a situation, for our convenience, Indian Railways has made many types of symbols in railway tracks, stations and trains, which are useful for railway workers, loco pilots, railway employees: for their safety measures, danger zone identification and many other types of easy signs, rules and regulations. Similar insignia are the different colored stripes besides the doors and windows of the train coaches, some of which are yellow and white, some are red, blue and some are grey and green. There are many types of coaches in Indian Railways trains, one of which is ICF coach. Whenever we travel in Blue ICF coaches, we see that some of these coaches are marked with yellow white stripes. These yellow white stripes are made on the rear end of the windows and doors of the second class, un- reserved or general coaches. Whenever a train arrives at a railway station. passengers do not face any problem in identifying the reserved compartments or such coaches, but there is confusion in identifying the unreserved or general coaches, so they are colored in white and yellow stripes. Apart from this, the red and blue thick stripes that are seen in some coaches, indicate that disabled or sick passengers are traveling in this compartment. If any passenger suddenly falls ill while traveling in the train, he or she too can shift in this coach and take rest during the journey. When you see green stripes in the gray colored compartment of a train, then you know that this coach is only for women, althoughitis mostly seen in the auto closing door EMUs of Western Railway, Mumbai Rail coaches with red stripes indicate that these are first class coaches, a common sight on Western Railway in Mumbai. For example the crocodiles that live in salty waters near Australia have bite that is three times stronger than that of a tiger or lion. Besides a severe bite, the crocodile has the unique capacity of sensing the presence of even the smallest objects in its vicinity. Even humans cannot match this capacity of the crocodiles in this respect. The outer skin of the crocodile is very hard. How does it sense the presence of objectsin its vicinity? Forthe present! am very thirsty and would like you to get me some water to drink.” Peace of Mind Ananda went out in search of some source of water. He did find a pond but a number of bullock carts had just crossed it. The water in the pond was very dirty and obviously unfit for drinking. Surprisingly the water in the pond was clean this time. All the mud and trash that, had come to the top had settled down by now. Ananda filled his jug and brought clean water to the Master. Gautam Buddha said, “Ananda, here is the answerto your question” The disciples could not make out what Buddha had tried to convey. So Buddha explained to them in the following words. “Everyday happenings around us agitate our minds the way bullock carts had made the pond water muddy. All we need to dois to have patience and wait till the agitated mind settles down. If we do that, we shall attain Peace of Mind just as you were able to get clean water from the same pond which at one time had seemed muddy.” The disciples had got the Master's message and accepted it with a bow in reverence. ‘@ If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond yourhopes. © Dream big and dare tofeit ith will one can do anything, We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, each guided by a private of which there is no duplicate. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered overachievers, he said, "Okay, time for a quiz." Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide mouthed Mason jar and setit on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is the jar full?" Everyone in the class said, "Yes." Then he said, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar, DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?" By this time the class was on to him. “Probably not," one of them answered. Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is the jar full?" No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good!" Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager student raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things int!" No," the speaker replied, "That’s not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in atall. What are the ‘big rocks’ in your life? “Your children... Your loved ones... Your education... Your dreams... A worthy cause... Teaching or mentoring others.. Doing things that you love... Time for yourself... Your health... Your significant other." "Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all. If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you'll fill your life with little things to worry about that don’t really matter, and you'll never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big, important stuff (the big rocks) So, tonight or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the ‘big rocks’ in my life? Then, put those in your jarfirst." 31 @ LOTPOT DIGITAL EDITION 51 Red Fort is one of the prominent historical monuments in Delhi. His contribution to these disciplines is still a source of great inspiration to modern scholars. He was the first one to have used Algebra. His treatise Aryabhati was written in verse. It is one of the most talked about work of Aryabhatta. The information contained in this book mostly relates to Astronomy and Trigonometry. . There are 33 rules related to Arithmetic, Algebra and Trigonometry. We are well familiar with facts that Earth is spherical and rotates on its axis. Rotation causes day and night. Copernicus had stated this in the Middle ‘Ages but few people are aware that these facts had been discovered and stated by Aryabhatta a thousand year earlier. He had even stated that the circumference of earth is around 24835 miles. He had disproved the Hindu mythological beliefs about Solar and Lunar eclipses. He had even stated that Moon does not have its ‘own light but shines with the reflected light of the Sun. He corrected the length of the solar year from 366 days to 365.2951 days. In his book Aryabhati, he has stated his place of birth at Kusumpur and his date of birth in Shak Samvat 398(476). The exact place of hi birth however remains disputed, According to some others, his place of birth was Ashmak region in Maharashtra and that he came to Kusumpur for higher studies. He even stayed at Kusumpur for some time. 33 0 Mathematicians of Ancient India ARYABHATTA According to Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, Kusumpur is identified as Patliputra (modern day Patna). It was here that Nalanda functioned as a university for higher learning. It is possible that Aryabhatta lived there during the reign of Gupta kings whose rule is termed as the Golden period of ancient Indian history. . The findings of Aryabhatta had a great influence on development of Mathematical thought. The Aryabhati verses include 120 principles related to Astronomy and related mathematical calculations. They have a vast world of their own beneath the ground where they spread their roots far and wide and secretly talk, shake hands, trade with each other and make plans to destroy the enemy trees and plants nearby . In fact, they do this through a network of underground fungi (and bacteria (called the Wood Wide Web) that grow in and around their roots. While this fungus nourishes the plants, they get sugar in return. Through this network system, they support their new generation and kill the enemies. According to scientists, this underground social complex of trees and plants, plug in with fungal networks, goes very deep and share their resources with each other. The adult tree keeps the fungal network healthy by supplying sugar to the seedlings. Trees that are sick or dying, hand over their food resources to this network so that neighboring trees can use it. If the trees and plants face any danger, they make their defense system alert by transmitting chemical signals far and wide by the fungi wrapped around their roots. But just as there are many bad aspects of the internet in the human world, in the same way there are many negative points of wood Wide Web Net too For example, orchids, hack this net system, and steal the resources from surrounding trees and plants. . Trees and plants of many other species, such as the black walnut, destroy their rival trees by spreading toxic chemicals through these networks. Scientists are still investigating the mysterious super- ‘organism world of trees and plants under the ground in which we walk. 39_ © LOTPOPDIGIDAWEDITIGNS} NEWS 1m Sulena Majumdar Arora Who does not recognize the mountain man of Bihar, Dashrath Manjhi?
