TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Short Term Effects
Eyes
Skin
Ingestion
Inhalation
Not a primary eye irritant
Not a primary skin irritant. A concentration of 12% propyl paraben i
propylene glycol did not irritate the human skin whereas a 15% solut
‘was irritant.
Propyl paraben LD,, oral mouse >8000 mg/kg body weight but doses of
60Ding/kg were reported fatd to dogs and rabbit.
No significant toxic effect reported.
Long Term Effects
‘The product has not shown any evidence in tests so far of being
carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction. In many of the tests
reviewed up to September 1988, the tests indicated no significant adverse
long term effects if the product is used as intended and recommended by
the manufacturer. There is considerable presumption, partially supported
by the experimental findings, chat it is rapidly metabolised and excreted by
Relatively rare sensitization can occur when used in pharmaceutical
preparations and in cases of ingestion or injection - exacerbation of pre-
existing skin complaints or by application to damaged skin is a more
common sensitization cause.
ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Biodegradability Soil extracts, drain water‘and river water containing 2 variety of
bacteria which grew ceadily in media containing hydroxy benzoic
acid esters as sole carbon sources, suggesting these esters are not
very resistant to microbial degradation.
Aquatic Toxicity LC, leuciscus idus Smg/l (48 hours) - due to low water solubility
the test was conducted with propyl paraben sodium salt.
