Determine the correct answer from the four choices a, b, c, and d. After you have decided on the best answer, shade the oval above the letter that corresponds to your answer. 1. The shaft carries a load of 400 N and the maximum shearing stress is not to exceed 65 MPa. The load is

act at a distance of 300 mm from A and 500 mm from B. The shaft is supported by bearings A and B. If the shaft diameter is 100 mm and the shaft loads are steady and rotating, how much torque will the shaft develop, in N-mm. Use ASME code for this shaft, km = 1.5; ks = 1.0. 2. The piston rod for operating cylinder of an air operated press is to exert a maximum force of 40 kN. During the application of this force the air pressure in the cylinder is maintained at 700 kPa. Assuming the piston rod length to be 760 mm long, it right hand end pin connected to the operating lever and piston end of the rod fixed ended. Calculate (a) diameter of piston rod, in mm for safety factor of 2.5 and Sy = 312 MPa; E = 69 MPa and (b) diameter of the cylinder bore, in mm required if stuffing and piston packing friction is 10% of the maximum force. 3. Flange bolt couplings connect two 2 in. diameter shaft. Power transmitted is 5 Hp at 300 rpm for all parts of the coupling. The coupling is made up of AISI C1030, annealed. The hub diameter and thickness

are 115 mm and 101 mm respectively. Web thickness is 19 mm. The flange uses five, 16 mm diameter bolts. Diameter of the bolt circle is 180 mm. The key thickness, width and length are 15 mm, 15 mm and 85 mm respectively. Find (a) shearing stress in key, in MPa; and (b) the shearing stress on the bolt based on yield strength, in MPa, if Sys = 0.5 of Sy.
