In order to extend the size of land, a process of absorption occurred where wealthy land owners took over the land of their poor neighbours, sometimes using illegal ways. 3. Many small proprietors were dispossessed which resulted in many persons having to change their job. 4. Poor whites moved (o urban areas in search of jobs such as innkeepers; clerks and skilled craftsmen., some migrated to other colonies and North America, others became buccaneers or fishermen while some went into the army. 5. Monoculture — The land owners concentrated on the cultivation of a single crop (sugar cane). 6. Landholdings increased in size, previous smallholdings were grouped together into larger estates under the ownership of one planter or two planters.
