Medium-dark
Because it contains more melanin, this skin tone
“rarely burns and readily tans,” Dr. Hogan explains.
It also is very susceptible to conditions characterized
by hyperpigmentation, such as melasma, which
presents as blotchy patches on sun-exposed areas.
“The more melanin you have in your skin, the more
prone you are to hyperpigmentation, including post-
inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks caused by
acne, skin injury and scarring,” Dr. Marchbein adds.

CARE CUES Rather than using stronger acids

or other exfoliants that can irritate, leading to more
hyperpigmentation, opt for treatments with gentler tone-
evening ingredients such as mandelic acid, which also helps
control oil, Dr. Liu suggests. For melasma, “oral prescription
and topical tranexamic acid and topical treatments with
cysteamine are effective,” Dr. Marchbein says. “Using SPF
is still very important for darker skin tones,” Dr. Liu adds;

With the most melanin of all the skin tones, this category
includes Black skin that “is deeply pigmented and almost
never burns,” Dr. Hogan says. Compared to other skin types,
“it’s been shown that African American skin has decreased
levels of ceramides — lipids that make up a large percentage
of its top layer — making it more prone to moisture loss, which
can lead to dryness,” says Janiene Luke, M.D., an associate
professor of dermatology at Loma Linda University in Loma
Linda, CA. “Common issues such as acne and eczema are
also seen in dark skin, and there is a tendency toward post-
inflammatory hyperpigmentation, in which dark spots and
discoloration can be present for months to years after the
conditions resolve.” In addition, “pigmentary disorders such
as melasma are prevalent,” she notes.

CARE CUES Replenish ceramide levels with emollient

moisturizers that contain the ingredient, Dr. Luke advises. To prevent
post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be brought on by
acne, eczema and other issues, visit a dermatologist. “I recommend
aggressively treating the primary skin condition first and applying
sunscreen daily, as it’s paramount in stopping the exacerbation of
hyperpigmentation,” she says. “Melasma can be treated by targeting
melanogenesis, the process by which melanin is produced, with either

Rather than settle for the choppy original floor plan, Alice Arterberry
and Barrett Cooke of Arterberry Cooke Architecture upgraded this
home’s hardest-working floor in collaboration with the homeowners,
giving it an airy, open layout fit for entertaining. The designers
combined the kitchen, dining area and living space and added bifold

The kitchen’s main eating area, which features wood paneling, is nestled in an ultra-sunny

For that reason, a custom quartz-composite tabletop (also featured in the kitchen) is a no-fail
choice. “They wanted it to be indestructible so they could use the space for everything and
not worry about damaging the table,” says Cooke.

after showering helps
prevent residue from

STUNNING
STONE
Natural stone, like marble,

PAINT OUT WOOD PANELING.
The bathroom’s white wood paneling mirrors the original walls in the primary
bedroom and helps anchor the setup. “It was dark wood when they purchased the house,
but we painted it white and kept it all lighter and brighter,” Cooke says. “We looked
for elements that worked when the house was originally constructed and added to those
as much as possible to maintain a cohesive feeling.”

WASH WALLS
Don’t let small mildew spots
on painted walls spoil your
spa moment. Scrub gently
with a brush dipped in sudsy
water. Next, apply a mix of
3 Tbsp chlorine bleach to
1 qt water. Wait five minutes,
scrub, rinse and air-dry.

Any busy family needs a simple area equipped to handle real life. Since the first floor lacked a

If you’re still nursing a wound because you weren’t
invited to a wedding years ago, consider shedding
the burden. “Sometimes you may fear that you’re
‘giving in’ if you let go of a grudge, but you’re just
giving yourself the opportunity not to let something

treatment of patients with Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Macular Edema
following Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO), Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), and Diabetic
Retinopathy (DR).
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
EYLEA® (aflibercept) Injection is a prescription medicine administered by injection into the
eye. You should not use EYLEA if you have an infection in or around the eye, eye pain or

has been reported with the use of EYLEA.
In some patients, injections with EYLEA may cause a temporary increase in eye pressure
within 1 hour of the injection. Sustained increases in eye pressure have been reported with
repeated injections, and your doctor may monitor this after each injection.
There is a potential but rare risk of serious and sometimes fatal side effects, related to
blood clots, leading to heart attack or stroke in patients receiving EYLEA.

LEGEND OF THE CRAB CLASSIC

According to Maryland lore, these patties are believed to have been enjoyed as early as the 16th century by Indigenous
Americans of the Chesapeake region, who are said to have coated crabmeat with cornmeal before frying it in bear fat. It might
not have been until the 1930s that the name “crab cake” first appeared in a cookbook, New York World’s Fair Cookbook. Now ways
of making the dish vary, from the use of Old Bay seasoning in Maryland to the addition of Cajun spices and hot sauce in Louisiana.

LOOK FOR REGULATIONS

ON THE LABEL
Cheaper pet food isn’t necessarily low-quality,
and vice versa. Don’t be swayed by language that’s
little more than a ploy to separate you from your
money. Nothing regulates signifiers like “gourmet”
and “holistic,” so those words don’t mean much,
Beck explains. Instead, look for the logo of the
Association of American Feed Control Officials
followed by the required nutritional adequacy
statement — this indicates that the food is com-
plete and balanced and meets guidelines for the
recommended amount and proportion of essen-
tial nutrients for different nutritional categories
of pets, such as gestation/lactation, growth,
maintenance and all life stages. Also, the fact
that something doesn’t sound appetizing to our
human palates doesn’t mean it’s not good for
a pet. Animal proteins such as red meat, chicken
and fish help them build and maintain muscle
tone and development as well as healthy skin.
Meat and bone meal provide amino acids, calcium
and phosphorous, which help them keep muscles
lean and teeth and bones strong. Animal fat helps
give them energy, healthy skin and a shiny coat.
And grains and legumes can provide protein,
