What is Analgesic?
Analgesics are those drugs that mainly provide relief pain. It is also known as
a painkiller or pain reliever.
The most common groups of painkillers are:
1. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs)
- This are a class of analgesic medication or a medicine that are widely used
to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and bring down a high temperature.
Example: Aspirin, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and etc.
2. Opioids (narcotics)
-This are a class of drugs that may be legal (prescription painkillers) or illegal
(heroine). This stops the body sending pain signal to the brain.
Example: Heroine, Morphine, Codeine and etc.
What are analgesics used for?
Analgesics may be taken to relieve pain that arises from a wide range of
conditions, such as:
- After surgery.
- Due to injury, such as a fractured bone.
- Headache and migraine.
- For aches and pains like menstrual cramps or muscle soreness.
- For chronic painful conditions such as arthritis, cancer or back pain.
