INSTRUCTIONS

1. This activity comprises three main questions.

2. Complete all questions in the order they are presented to you.

3. The maximum mark for this assignment is 20.

4. This assignment must be written by hand as you will attach it to the Mastery

check assignment. You should follow these steps to complete the task.
a. Write your answers on a blank sheet of paper or an exam pad. You should

include your name and surname, your student number and the title of the

assignment. The title of this assignment is Essay writing planning.

b. In addition to the above, you are required to sign the plagiarism declaration. In

order to do this, copy the text below onto your piece of paper, and insert your

signature below it.

QUESTION 1

This Test your knowledge activity serves as the planning stage for your Mastery check.
Choose one of the essay topics below, and begin planning your essay.

Read through the following essay topics below, and decide which ONE of these topics
you would like to use for the essay you will write. Remember, that you can write a
narrative essay, descriptive essay or argumentative essay on one of these topics.

1.1 If I told you the truth, you wouldn’t believe me.

1.2 The Year 2063: a glimpse into the future.

1.3 “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.“ -Helen Keller

1.4 The use of animals for research purposes is justified.

1.5 “‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” - Alfred Lord

1.6 The pictures reproduced below may evoke a reaction or feeling in you or stir your

imagination. Select ONE picture and write an essay in response. Write the question

number (1.6.1 or 1.6.2) of your choice and give your essay a title.

Note: There must be a clear link between your essay and the picture you have chosen.

Now that you have chosen a topic for your essay, you need to start planning. Answer

the following guiding questions to help you brainstorm your ideas. Note that not all of

these questions may be relevant to the topic you have chosen, so fill in the appropriate

details wherever possible.

You are required to write these answers on lined paper that you will attach to your final

Mastery check as proof of planning (so keep your brainstorming safe!). You may present

your planning in a mindmap or bullet point format.

2.1 Answer the following questions:

● Which essay topic have you chosen?

● Provide three options of titles for your essay.

● Write down the ideas you would include in your introduction.

○ If you are writing an argumentative essay, what would your hook and

thesis statement be?

● Plan the body of your essay.

○ If you are writing a narrative essay, plot your narrative arc and ideas for

the storyline, setting and characters.

○ If you are writing a descriptive essay, write down ideas to describe your

topic, using your five senses if you can.

○ If you are writing an argumentative essay, plan the different points of

your argument and your defending reasons.

● Plan your final thoughts and conclusion.

● Include any other details you want to work into your essay.

At this point you should have a lot of ideas written down! Go through your ideas you

came up with in Question 2 and see if there is anything else to add or a way to organise

these thoughts in a way that would flow coherently.

Using these ideas, write the rough draft of your essay on lined paper. You will need to

use this rough draft for your Mastery check and attach it to your final as proof of

planning and editing, so keep it safe. Remember, your essay should be between 300

and 350 words.
