Brezel socks
SIZE:
S/M
Approximately 18/21 cm (7.3/8 in) foot circumference (length is adjustable)
MATERIALS:
o US 5 – US 6 (3.75 - 4 mm) circular needle long enough for ‘magic loop” or dpn’s (adjust needle size if
necessary to obtain the correct gauge)
o cable needle
o stitch markers
o tapestry needle

YARN:

Approximately 150 yards of MC and 30 yards CC of aran/worsted weight yarn to obtain gauge.

GAUGE:

23 sts x 28 rows=10 cm/4 inches in cable pattern

20 sts x 28 rows=10 cm/4 inches in stockinette st

DIRECTIONS Row 2(WS): yo, p to yo, ssp (yo with following st), turn

Using CC and smaller needles tubular cast on 40/44 Row 3: yo, k to yo, k3tog ( 2 yos with following st), turn
sts and join to work in the round being careful not to
twist. Row 4: yo, p to yo, sssp (yos with following st), turn

Set up round: place marker for beginning of the round, Repeat rows 3-4 until all yos have been consumed,
work in 2x2 rib [k2, p2] for 3 rounds. ending with a WS row. The last row will bring the RS
facing. Break off CC. With MC , yo, k to yo, k2tog, work
Switch to MC. instep sts in pattern to 1 st before yo, k2tog, k to end.

Work 12/14 rounds in established ribbing. FOOT

Switch to larger needles and start to work sock in Continue working as established with brezel pattern on
Brezel pattern (below) for the first 22 sts of each round the instep and stockinette stitch on the sole for 2/3
and in established ribbing for the last 18/22 sts. Work more brezel pattern repeats.

Round 2 and all even rounds: knit knits and purl purls

Round 3: k2, c4fpk, [p2, k2]x 2, p2, c4bkp, k2

Round 5: k2, p2, c4fk, k2, p2, k2, c4bk, p2, k2,

Round 7: k2, p2, k2, c4fpk, p2, c4bkp, k2, p2, k2

Round 9: [k2, p2]x2, c6fkpk, [p2, k2]x2

Next round: work in brezel pattern as established, pm,

knit to end.

HEEL

Heel is worked across 18/22 sole sts only. Work to m,

drop MC and join CC.

Row 1(RS): k to last st, turn, leaving last st unworked
Round 1: k1, ssk, p1, [k2, p2]x3, k2, p1, k2tog, k1,
Row 2(WS): yo backward, p to last st, turn k2tog, k to 2 sts before m, ssk

Row 3: yo, k to 1 st before yo, turn
Row 4: yo, p to 1 st before yo, turn
Repeat rows 3-4 until you have 6 sts in between yos at
center of the row.
Second half of the heel
Row 1(RS): k to yo, k2tog (yo with following st), turn
Round 2: k1, ssk, [k2, p2]x3, k2, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k to
2 sts before m, ssk
Round 3: k1, ssk, k1, [p2, k2]x2, p2, k1, k2tog, k1,

Thread tail through remaining sts and pull snugly to
close the top or graft toe using kitchener stitch.
k2tog – knit 2 sts together
ssk – slip, slip, knit
c4fk – (Cable 4 front, knit): Slip 2 sts to cable needle
and hold to front of work; k2 from left needle, k2 from
cable needle
c4bk – (Cable 4 back, knit): Slip 2 sts to cable needle
and hold to back of work; k2 from left needle, k2 from
cable needle

Weave in all ends. Lightly block socks. c4fpk – (Cable 4 front, purl, knit): Slip 2 sts to cable
needle and hold to front of work; p2 from left needle, k2
from cable needle

c4bkp – (Cable 4 back, knit, purl): Slip 2 sts to cable

needle and hold to back of work; k2 from left needle, p2
from cable needle

c6fkpk – (Cable 6 front, knit, purl, knit): Slip 2 sts to

cable needle and hold to front of work; k2, p2 from left
