●The National Commission for Women (NCW) registered an increase of at least 2.5 times in
domestic violence complaints since the nationwide lockdown, according to official data.

●More than 8,500 women were killed by their spouses and their family members and more
than 1 lakh cases of domestic violence were reported in 2018 (NCRB 2018).

●The conviction rate for rape cases in India was 62% (1971); 26.9% (2009); and 27.1%
(2013).

●India’s female labour force participation (FLFP), at 24% (2017-18), is among the lowest in
South Asia.

●The report of the National Crime Records Bureau (2017) informs us that 1.27 lakh cases of
rape are pending in the courts at various stages, with 1,840 of them pending for more than
10 years.

●The NCRB says that more than 30,000 cases of rape were registered. In other words, a
rape was committed every 15 minutes in 2017, almost unnoticed.

●As many as 97% of abusers and rapists are either a friend or family member of the victim,
who is stigmatized. Thus, gender crime is rarely reported. Of the cases reported, only 3%
result in convictions because of shoddy police work and a grindingly slow judicial process.

●According to World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2020, India has dropped
four points from 2018, to take the 112th rank on the Index.

●According to the index, the country has reportedly closed two thirds of its overall gender
gap, with a score of 66.8%.

●The participation of women in the labour force is also among the lowest in the world, and
the female estimated earned income is only one-fifth of male income

●Research from the Commonwealth project, The Economic Cost of Violence against
Women and Girls: , carried out in 2019 shows that gender-based violence leads to estimated
costs of 4.6% of GDP.
