NAMING AND WRITING CHEMICAL FORMULAS OF ALKYNES AND CYCLOALKYNES

The objective of this activity is to be able to name and write alkynes using the formula CnH2n-2 and
name cycloalkynes using the formula CnH2n−4.

Materials:

Pen, Paper, and ball-and socket model

Procedure: Using the ball and socket model, create a model of hexyne and cyclohexyne. Then name it
using the formulas given.

Results:

We use the formula CnH2n-2 for hexyne because it’s an alkyne. The “n” indicates the number of carbon
atoms present in the compound and after counting how may, we then substitute it in the formula.
Hexyne has 6 carbons, so C6H2(6)-2 equals C6H10. On the other hand we use the formula CnH2n−4 for
cyclohexyne because it’s a cycloalkyne. Some procedure and substitution process is done, so the
molecular formula of cyclohexyne is C6H12.
