26 Naming and Writing Chemical Formulas of Amines and Nitriles

OBJECTIVE:

To be able to name an amine compound which is CH3CH2CH2C- NH2 and a nitrile compound which is
CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2C triple bond N.

MATERIALS:

Pen and Paper

PROCEDURE:

*For the amines, identify first how many carbons present. Count the number of hydrogen atoms that
are replaced by an alkyl or aryl group in ammonia because amines are classified as primary (1o),
secondary (2o) and tertiary (3o). If only one hydrogen atom is replaced then amines of the form R-NH2
or primary amines (1o) are obtained.

*For the nitriles, identify first how many carbons present. The suffix “nitrile” is simply added to the
name of the parent alkane that contains the CN group.

RESULT:

*For the amine compound, there are 3 carbon atoms present and the amine group is bonded to carbon
number 1 it is a primary amine and it would be name as propan-1-amine.

*This nitrile is six carbon long so the name of this molecule would simply be hexanenitrile but for the
common name if it has a six carbon carboxylic acid it would be caproic acid so to change it into a nitrile
we would call this capronitrile.
