The MPT is designed to test fundamental
lawyering skills. You are provided with a “File”
and a “Library.” The File will include a factual
scenario and a memo from a supervising attorney
with instructions for a task (like drafting a memo,
or writing a letter to a client). It may also include
documents, contracts, articles, records,
depositions, etc. The library may contain cases,
statutes, regulations, and rules. The examinee is
asked to extract from the library the legal rules
necessary to analyze the problem and perform
the task. No particular substantive knowledge is
required: the Library contains all rules necessary
to analyze the facts and address the problem.
