Competency 6: Participate Actively in the Profession

Artifact 1: Career Interests Video

For this assignment, I created a video that outlined my future career interests. I discuss three
potential careers that I may pursue in the future, a math club advisor, math coach, and curriculum
team director. Similarly, I discuss four different professional organizations including the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Associated Teachers of Mathematics in
Connecticut (ATOMIC), National Education Association (NEA), and American Mathematical
Society (AMS). I am already a member of NEA but have also taken steps towards becoming a
member of AMS and NCTM. When I was completing my undergraduate degree, I was able to
attend a workshop provided by NCTM as well as volunteer for an event that was sponsored by
AMS. This has allowed me to participate within various communities of practice.

This assignment provided me an opportunity to grow, as it helped me consider the ways that
being involved in various communities of practice allows you opportunities to participate in
relevant activities. For me, attending a workshop and volunteering at a mathematical focused
event are just two examples. Similarly, I also saw growth within my learning, as I was able to
explore careers that I was interested in and find specifics about the job responsibilities. After
completing this assignment, my goals included continuing in my current position for a few more
years and then possibly transitioning into one of the roles that I discuss in this presentation;
however, my current goals have shifted slightly since. Now, I would like to pursue my PhD in
Mathematics Curriculum and then advance to a role as a curriculum writer. In addition, I have
recently learned more about Instructional Designers and have been interested in exploring this
career option more.
