Case study Evaluating Scientific Writing

1. What problem are the researchers trying to solve?

 Is it true that exercise training expands the Hippocampus and improves memory?

2. What hypothesis is posed by the researchers?

 Adults' hippocampus volume increases when they engage in aerobic activity.

3. What should the instrumentation in this investigation be

measuring to address the hypothesis?

 We believe the instrumentation used for this research would be the MRI scan and it would
ideally measure the increase or decrease in volume of the hippocampus.

4. What conclusions (predictions) can you draw if the preceding

hypothesis is correct?

 I always predict that individuals who engage in aerobic activity will have a modest increase
in hippocampal volume than the individuals that do not engage in aerobic exercise. As a
result, individuals who participate in aerobic exercises will increase their episodic memory.

Part 3-Methods
1. What was the study's control group?

 Individuals assigned to conduct strengthening/toning exercises three times per week made
up the control group in this study.

2. The table below (Table 1) provides the recorded demographic information for the
participants. Is there a statistically significant difference between the ages of the
experimental and control group? Why is this important?

There is a statistically significant age difference between the experimental and control

groups. Statistical significance is used to support the idea that the results are genuine

and not the result of chance or luck when reviewing a data set and performing the

proper tests to discover if one or more factors have an impact on an outcome.

3. What are the limitations of the instrumentation utilized in this

investigation, and what measurements are made?
Every research has its limitations. In this case, the limitations could possibly be:

 If the person has smoking or alcohol habits

 If the person has any disease related to the brain, such as Alzheimer’s
Disease

 The person's diet and other lifestyle factors.

 If the person has any psychiatric disorder, including depression and

addiction or stress disorder.
