SUMMARY

The goals of Experiment 4 Gas Pressure Process Control were to identify the critical components of the
air pressure control system and mark them in the P&ID, study single loop flow control with a PID
controller, control pressure in single and two capacity processes with a PID controller, and tune the PID
controller using the Ziegler Nichols closed-loop method. The procedure began with a general procedure,
and the main procedure included three trials in which the PID controller was set with values of PB1=
70%, T11= 40 seconds, and TD1= 0 seconds, and the controller was set to Auto (A) mode, and after the
response was stable, it was switched to Manual (M) mode to decrease 5-10% of MV, and then back to
Auto (A) mode. The procedure is repeated for the second and third trials, with PB1= 45 percent, T11= 10
seconds, and TD1= 0 seconds in the second trial and PB1= 20 percent, T11= 10 seconds, and TD1= 2
seconds in the third trial. We can say that the process is stable based on the chart in Figure 4.1 and the
Ziegler-Nichols' Closed Loop Method explanation of system stability. The amplitude of the curves does
not vary much, and the curves also oscillated at the same frequency for each trial of the process. Despite
the fact that the results show that the process was oscillating appropriately and frequently, different trials
have different proportional band values (PB). The Closed Loop Method of Ziegler-Nichols was thus
proven. The method developed its turning rules by stimulating a wide range of processes and correlating
controller parameters with step response characteristics. Theoretically, the higher the proportional band
(PB) values, the lower the control gain (Kc) obtained. In this process, the results obtained did not proven
the theory. Yet, the theory of as proportional band (PB) values increase, the control gain (KC) values will
decrease is not proven.
