The document provides instructions for solving 5 problems involving the design of compression members made of steel sections. The problems involve investigating the adequacy of W-shapes and built-up sections to support specified axial loads and determining their compressive load capacities based on their end conditions and lengths. Section properties are to be computed based on given dimensions unless otherwise specified, using A36 steel.

In the following problems, use A36 steel unless otherwise specified.
Also, compute the
section properties such as area, inertia, radius of gyration based on the given section dimension unless otherwise specified.
Design of Compression Member
1. Investigate the adequacy of a W310X62 to support an axial compressive load of
300 kN dead and 200 kN live on an unsupported length of 5.5 m. Assume both ends are hinged. 2. For the W410X54, determine the compressive load capacity assuming one end is fixed and the other end is hinged and that the lateral support for the weak axis is provided at mid-height of the 5.5-meter length. 3. A hinged-end column 6 m long is fabricated from a W310X62 section and two C250X45 channels arranged as shown below. Determine the compressive load capacity.
4. A hinged-end column 5 m long is fabricated from a W310X62 section and a
C250X45 channel arranged as shown below. Determine the compressive load capacity. 5. A truss member 8 m long carries a compressive load of 200 kN dead and 400 kN live and consists of two C200X17 channels and a 250X10mm cover plates placed as shown in the Figure below. Check the adequacy of the section.
