In the following problems, use A36 steel unless otherwise specified.

Design of Beams-Columns (Axial Plus Bending)

1. A steel column is fabricated from a W310X60 section and two C250X45 channels
arranged as shown in the Figure below. Determine the adequacy of the section to
carry a load of 600 kN at an eccentricity of 300 mm from the centroidal x-axis and
250 mm from the centroidal y-axis.

2. Investigate the adequacy of a W310X79 to be used for the beam and column of
the frame loaded as shown below. Assume lateral support to be provided only at
the joints and use Fy = 248 MPa. Neglect weight of frame members.

3. Investigate the adequacy of a W250X89 to be used for the beam and column of
the frame loaded as shown below. Assume lateral support to be provided only at
the joints and use Fy = 248 MPa. Neglect weight of frame members.
4. Use the results for the design of the beam and girders from problem #6
“Assignment 5” with Fy = 345 MPa. Assume k = 1.0
a. Design column C4 between GFL and 2FL considering full dead plus full live
load.
b. Check trial section for C4 considering half live along GL B-C. Adjust if
inadequate.
c. Check trial section for C4 considering half live along GL 1-2. Adjust if
inadequate.
