San Cristobal
History
It was created in 1932 with the name of Province Trujillo in honor of its creator, the
dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina. After Trujillo’s death in 1961, it was given its
current name of San Cristóbal by the name of the capital city. It included the current
province of Monte Plata until 1982.
Geograpy
San Cristobal is located in an irregular valley, surrounded by hills and hills of low
height. This small valley is crossed by the rivers Nigua, Yubaso and Doña Ana. In
addition, the Sancristobal relief is crossed by numerous ravines. Its climate is tropical
with frequent rains, temperatures are irregular.
Hydrography
The main rivers of the province are the Haina River, which constitutes the eastern
boundary of the province; the Nizao, which forms the boundary with the province
Peravia, and the Nigua. Other rivers are Mana, Yubaso (or Blanco), La Toma and the
streams Itabo, Sainaguá and Najayo.
The central area, and urban, because there are the main financial, commercial and
industrial centers of the municipality, as well as the main educational and political
centers (Governorate, City Council). The northern area, for the large number of lycées
and schools located in the rural area, communities that produce, avocados, citrus
and other minor fruits.
Comunications
Nowadays, San Cristóbal is one of the cities with the best indices in the area of
telecommunications. It has the services of the main telephone companies in the
country, as well as various cable and satellite television companies.
