CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY


INTRODUCTION: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become one of the important activities to every organization. As globalization is increasing, every organization in every country aims at contribution toward to society in different ways. CSR is linked to the concept of Triple Bottom Line Reporting (TBL) which is used as a framework of measuring an organizations performance against various factors such as economic, social and environmental. The key forces that drive CSR are: y Enlightened self-interest this is creating a synergy of ethics, a sustainable global economy and a cohesive society where the market, labor and communities are able to function together. Social investment it has become increasingly important and a necessary part of business to contribute towards the physical infrastructure social capital Transparency and trust There are high expectations from the companies to be more open, accountable and mainly be prepared to report their performance publically related to social and environmental areas. Increased public expectations of business Apart from providing jobs and contributing to the economy through taxes and employment, the companies are expected to do much more than this.

THE CSR GUIDELINES The guidelines for CSR activities help the organization to plan, implement, monitor the activities efficiently. y Planning: The CSR activity to be done is to be selected by the company. The activity should be such that it gives benefits to the society. The place to perform these activities can be near the area where the company does its business or anywhere else in the country. The company should consider factors like budget required for expenditure and the number of people benefited by the activity. y Implementation: This step involves actual implementation of the activity. The time frame for performing the activity should be clear. Entire organization should be

involved in the activity. If any damages are caused due to companies operations they should be compensated by the company back to the society and environment. The activity should ultimately aim at serving the society and environment. The implementation should be ethical. y Promotion: Implementation helps in bringing the idea into reality. This activity should be known to all in the society. Hence steps related to promotion of this activity are necessary to take. All the expenditure done for the same should be documented properly which may help the organization in tax reduction. y Monitor: Only implementation does not help, the activity should be continued over a period of time. This needs monitoring. This monitoring is done by an committee which is appointed ie CSR committee. External body also maintains track of the activity. COMPANIES INVOLVED IN CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ITC: PRIMARY EDUCATION: y y ITC helps poor society to get education at very low price. They started developing and improving the school buildings, constructing toilets, give electricity supply and other more facilities. They also provide school books, uniforms. Around 50,260 childrens are educated by ITC. y They encourage young people to be tutors for these students, which ultimately increase the employment. They conduct teacher training programs for which increases the standard of teaching in schools. TREE PLANTATION: ITC has started preventinf afforestation in the rural areas, which causes bad effects on environment. In year 2005-06 they planted almost 49 million plants in the area of 65 hectar, which helped generate employment for 6 lakh people. In next 7-8 years almost 600 million plants were planted in an area of 100 hectares. They also help farmers to produce good quality crops by giving loans.

Disaster Relief: They are active in the field of health, education and disaster management. They provide trained volunteers for disaster management and also provide equipments for the same. During the 9/11 attack, HCC worked actively in disaster management and help the affected people. HIV Initiative: They have taken HIV awareness issue, as HIV has become a social issue and maximum people are being affected due to no knowledge of the disease.

VARIETIES OF CYBER CRIME: y Theft of Information Services: This can be done by gaining access to the PBX board of an organization, make their own calls and sell calls to the third parties. y Communications in Furtherance of Criminal Conspiracies: As organizations use information networks for maintaining databases and for communications, similarly, criminals use information technology for anti-social activities such as drug trafficking, gambling, money laundering, weapons trade, etc. y Telecommunications Piracy: With the use of digital technology, one can reproduce perfect representation and easy disseminations of prints, graphics, multimedia, etc. Due to this many copyrighted material has been reproduced for personal use or for sale at a lower price. y Electronic Money Laundering: Since quite some time criminals have used information technology to for continuous sabotage and hacking of bank accounts and electronic fund transfers. New technologies make it easier to hide the origin and destination of fund transfer. y Electronic Vandalism and Terrorism: Societies which use computers in day to day life are vulnerable to attack from people who are motivated by either curiosity or vindictiveness. These people can cause or contribute toward destruction of the society, cause inconvenience and can also inflict massive harm.

Sales and Investment Fraud: As e-commerce become more and more popular, the application of digital technology to fraudulent crime became even greater. The use of telephones for fraudulent sales pitches or bogus investment overtures is increasingly common. The cyberspace host millions of investment opportunities. The fraudsters can now enjoy access to millions of people around the world at a much cheaper rate.

PREVENTION METHODS: y Firewalls: These programs protect users from unauthorized access attacks while on network. These programs allow only the users the access to access information. y Frequent password changing: Due the use of multi user systems, security has become dependent on passwords. Thus it is very essential to change their passwords frequently. One should keep in mind that the data is highly volatile and hence passwords must be kept to sensitive data secure. y Safe surfing: One can practice this by keeping e-mail address private, not chatting on open systems, visiting secure sites, etc. Data must be accepted and downloaded from know users only. y Frequent virus checks: Devices such as pen drive, hard disks, CD/DVD ROM s much be checked with antivirus frequently. These antivirus softwares must be updated regularly and computers must be scheduled for an anti viruses checking. y Email filters: Filters help to sort out unwanted emails and deletes them directly from mail without the user being able to view them.
