EXTINCTION OF

THE DODO
Angel Ricardo Velázquez Estrada

Many years ago there was a species that was

abundant on earth that had the name of Dodo, it
was a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius. The
dodo, as well as other birds of the Indian Ocean,
were related to pigeons that had lost the ability to
fly to adapt to terrestrial life. There was a genetic
relative of the dodo called Solitario de Rodríguez
(from Rodríguez Island), another species of extinct
flightless bird, both species were part of the
Raphinae subfamily.
Formerly there were many dodos but the
denatured hunting of this species caused their
extinction.
The arrival of the human being had a lot of impact
on their extinction, people hunted these animals
for not being intelligent, when people discovered
the dodo, the dodos simply did not see humans as a threat, people therefore dominated
them as clumsy and stupid.
But not only that was the cause of the extinction of the dodos, with the arrival of the human
being new species were incorporated such as (pigs, macaques, crabs, dogs, cats and rats)
including diseases and the destruction of the forests on which the subsistence of the dodo
depended to a great extent.
It is estimated that the looting of their nests by the new species had a more devastating
effect than that of hunting. In particular, the pigs brought by humans to the island ended up
with the eggs of this bird, as they raided their nests and ate them. As a consequence, the
complete extinction of this bird occurred a century after the arrival of human beings on the
island.
