Background:

Bangladesh is on its way to creating a solid concrete foundation for its future through
various mega projects aiming to develop the nation’s infrastructure. With more than $3.5bn
budgeted in Financial Year 2019 for the 7 infrastructure mega projects including bridges, rail
lines, power plants, and a metro rail, the cement and associated market in the country looks
to be a bullish market. Besides these large scale projects, however, a higher income per
capita for the greater population also has led to greater consumption as building personal
homes, a somewhat tradition of Bangladeshis, has become more affordable. Developments
in real estate and commercial/public institutions have also contributed to consumption. An
increasing number of migrants traveling from rural areas to the big cities for opportunities
of better education, jobs, and wages, increasing urbanization in the country is also fueling
greater growth in the industry.

In construction industry where concrete is the main ingredient is experiencing a rapid

growth in recent. Many cement manufacturing plants, aggregate production units, ready
mix concrete production facilities and other factories related to concrete industry are rapidly
increasing. Whole industry is working relentlessly to meet this growing demand.However,
the construction sector in Bangladesh is heavily influenced by seasonality due to
Bangladesh’s subtropical monsoon climate. September/October to April/May are peak
seasons with demand declining during May/June to August/September, with activity of
varying depending on the duration of the rainy season. Over the past 5 years, the industry
has seen a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.67%, significantly greater than the
country’s GDP growth even considering future targets by the government set at 10%.

Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC):

A technical study report on the development of market for bulk cement in Bangladesh was
made in 1996, proved to be positive development towards modernization of cement
distribution system in Bangladesh, including setting up Ready mix concrete Plants. The
objective of this technical study was to formulate an action plan for the development of
market for bulk cement in large cement centres in Bangladesh and for gradual shift from the
traditional mode of transportation in bags to bulk transportation through setting up of
ready mixed concrete plants in different parts of the country. The recommendation of the

action plan provided a useful guidance towards expanding bulk cement market thus paving
a way for installation of ready mixed concrete plants in Bangladesh.

According to Cement Manufacturers Association, RMC is being increasingly recommended

for all major public construction work such as highways, flyovers. In Bangladesh, it can grow
to consume 40-45 percent of cement by 2020 through setting up of RMC plants in various
consumption centers.

In Bangladesh RMC was first used in 1993 by CONCORD. RMC was successfully established
sometime after 1998 in Bangladesh, especially at Dhaka and Chittagong. As per the
available information, there are around 80 RMC plant major cities with a total capacity of
around 200 CuM/hr, producing more than 1.8 million cubic meter of concrete per year.
According to the Bangladesh Ready Mix Concrete Association (BRMCA), 20 companies
became their member but it is not the real picture because many companies did not join the
