The Republic of Badami is a country of 1.5 billion people, it is the third
largest producer as well as the consumer of electricity. Three-quarter electricity is produced from fossil fuels, mainly coal. The Badami Institute of Policy and Ideation, the predominate policy making body of the Govt, released a report “Badami@2050- Towards a Bright Future”, it complied with the inputs from the experts w.r.t estimate increase in the population of the country by 2.5 billion. As the result consumption of the electricity would also increase at least by 4000 TWh. Inferring to the report submitted, the Govt of Badami came out with New Energy Policy (NEP). Mainly, to increase the production electricity in the country with 50% output from the renewable sources of energy. A committed was deployed in R&D of how to enable cleaner generation of energy from non-renewable sources. In pursuance, the Govt launched three projects, the Paramanu Nuclear Power Project under the Badami-US Nuclear deal, the Vrishabhavati Dam project, and the Dhatri integrated coal mining and power generation plant. The project received missed response of the public, which resulted in intense protests, the Govt slapped them with sedition cases. Better Badami an NGO working in the field of environmental protection, filed a PIL before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of Badami, claiming for the violation of fundamental rights and seeking closure of the nuclear power plant and coal plant. And also to postpone the dam project till the rehabilitation of displaced communities and payment of the compensation. Ironically, no person or community member related to these projects were made a party to the PIL. The Govt defended the projects, starting that it was in larger public interest as well as National interest. The S.C quashed all the sedition cases against the protestors. The matter has been posted to final hearing.
