Military Family Advisory Committee

The Military Family Advisory Committee honored by Raytheon Best Use of Volunteers Award

The Raytheon Achievement Awards recognize the outstanding programs developed by Armed Services YMCAs throughout the country. This May, the San Diego ASYMCA Military Family Advisory Committee received the Raytheon Award for Best Use of Volunteers. The Military Family Advisory Committee has been volunteering with various ASYMCA programs including the Neighborhood Exchange, The SuperParent Holiday Program, and other community events. Most recently, the committee has been developing a comprehensive resource guide for military families and service providers. The Military Family Advisory Committee is thrilled to have received the Raytheon Award for Best Use of Volunteers and looks forward to exploring additional ways to promote the San Diego ASYMCA while addressing the needs of the military community.

Thank You Cottonwood Golf Club for sponsoring the 6th Annual Duncan Hunter Wounded Marine Golf Tournament resulting in a donation of $26,440. Every penny is donated to Naval Medical Center Armed Services YMCA Programs that aid combat patients and their families. All costs associated with event are underwritten by Cottonwood, their vendors and friends. After spending the morning on the course, Honorary Chairman Duncan Hunter and his father presented the raffle and live auction items during the luncheon. Joe Browning, tournament coordinator, and Daryl Idler, Cottonwood Golf Club Managing General Partner, were the driving forces - thanks everyone!

NMC Volunteer Recognition

ASYMCA Volunteers Recognized at Naval Medical Center Volunteer Recognition

More than 200 ASYMCA Volunteers were recognized at the First Annual Naval Medical Center San Diego Volunteer Recognition. ASY Volunteers at Naval Medical Center contributed more than 18 thousand volunteer hours in 2010. RADM Faison and his staff also presented a lifetime achievement award to ASY Volunteer, Robert Samuel. Robert has been an ASY volunteer for 27 years. This past May, the Armed Services YMCA at Naval Medical Center coordinated a wonderful volunteer opportunity for the wounded, injured, and ill to participate in Habitat for Humanity. Though they are recovering from their own injures, they took time out of their day to give back to a family in need. While building a house with Habitat for Humanity, they were able to learn new skills, take on leadership roles and build confidence.

Final thoughts...
From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: Each month, as I look at the SNAPSHOT that Katie DesBois does such an outstanding job putting together, I am reminded that the SDASYMCA is so blessed to have so many giving people behind us - our volunteer board members, Civilian Advisory Committee members, Military Advisory Committee members, Community organizations, our many donors, our civilian volunteers and our military volunteers. All you need to do is look at this SNAPHOT to see that our accomplishments are a team effort. Thanks to the generosity of the Cottonwood Golf Club, Drew Brees, Integrated Sports Marketing, Cox Communications, our Military Family Advisory Committee volunteers, and all of our donors, the ASYMCA made such a positive difference in the lives of military families in the month of May. Seeing the success of so many events answers my continuing question: Why do we do what we do? We do what we do because we know what military families do for this great country. We do what we do because we know what it means to step into the shoes of a military family. We do what we do because we know the sacrifices military families make for this country and we understand the hardships of deployment separations and continual moving adjustments. We understand, we care, and we want military families to know how much we appreciate what they do to ensure that we continue to live in freedom under the Stars and Stripes. I ask everyone who does not understand why we do what we do, to step into the shoes of a military family and see what they see it is a different world. Tell every military family you know or you see that you appreciate what they do for us and for the world. God Bless you and God Bless America.

SPECIAL REQUESTS
I have three special requests to make of everyone reading this SNAPSHOT. First, as you may know, Mr. Baron Herdelin-Doherty, the newly arrived President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of San Diego County, was recently seriously injured when he was struck by an automobile while riding his bicycle. Baron is a true friend of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA and we wish him a complete recovery. Please remember Baron and his family in your prayers. Second, as you may also know, a member of our Board of Management, Admiral Bud Edney, was taken ill en route from Asia and underwent surgery in Honolulu. Admiral Edney is now back in San Diego recovering. Please remember Admiral Edney and his family in your prayers. _____________________________________________ Third, on the first of June, RADM Frank Gallo retired after leading the Armed Services YMCA of the USA for over 14 years. Taking over as the National Executive Officer, is Captain Mike Landers, USN (Ret.). Please keep them both in your prayers and also remember Brigadier General Tom Landwermeyer, USA (Ret.), the newly appointed Deputy National Executive Director of the ASYMCA of the USA. We welcome him and look forward to working with him to serve military families.
