Professional Responsibilities: Attendance to an IEP meeting

I was able to attend to an IEP meeting on January 30, 2020. It was a good
experience to be part of. The parent and the student attended the meeting. The was
having some struggles during testing. The parent expressed that the student was
feeling anxious and that that affected how the child took the test. The student was not
finishing some of her tests and sometimes would not even start them. The student
mentioned that she works hard and that she turns in all her work on time, but
sometimes she can get stressed because of the tests. She was diagnosed before with
generalized anxiety. She already had a 504, but they wanted to check options and see if
she qualified for an IEP. They explained the accommodations that can be made and
how the 504 can already help her with that. They decided that they can meet to see
what accommodations she needs and would help her, but she did not need SDI. They
helped her see her strengths and how she is capable of doing a lot more than she
thinks. The testing does qualify her for special services, but they thought that she was
capable of doing everything in a general ed classroom. She has good grades, just some
Cs but not many. They helped her feel comfortable and explained to the parent the
testing, etc. They decided to stay with a 504. The transition specialist was there and
helped explain that the 504 could follow her to college, and that an IEP doesn’t.
They all agreed on the decision. It was good to see what I have learned in assessments
being applied in an IEP meeting. In this case they are all looking for what is best for the
student. It shows, because they were able to motivate the student to advocate for
herself, help her see her potential, and help her find the best help she needs.
I learned how all of the people in the meeting are like a team and that they are all there
to support each other and work together to help the child and his or her family according
to their needs.
