Born in Guayaquil on October 1, 1935 at the Panchama Clinic. Son of Juan Pantaleon Jaramillo
Erazo, a native of Machachi and Apolonia Laredo Caceres, a Guayaquil woman of Jamaican
descent.10 11 His father emigrated to the province of Guayas in search of better job
opportunities and it was there that he met Apolonia.3 He April 2, 1941, when Julio was five
years old, he lost his father due to a work accident when he was making a cross for the grave
of his daughter who had died at a young age. His mother, who was left a widow, raised him
with his older brother, José (born in 1933) and popularly known as Pepe.3 Both brothers were
enrolled at the Sociedad Filantrópica del Guayas school, but Julio Jaramillo dropped out of his
studies in the third grade due to discipline problems.12 3 His first contact with music was
through Ignacio Topanga, a neighbor who gave him guitar lessons and let him play with
musical instruments
