INVERSION IN ENGLISH

We use inversions when sentences start with a negative or limiting adverb (formal registre):
Seldom have I read such a boring book / Not only did I read the letter; I also replied to the
manager.

Sometimes these inversions come in the second part of the sentence (check the link above for
the list of negative/limiting adverbs + inversion).

- 1st: If you come, we will make a decision on the budget: Should you come, we will
make..

- 2nd: If Donald Trump won, I would be surprised: were + subject + to + infinitive.

o to describe an unlikely future: : Were Donald Trump to win, I would be
suprised.
o To describe an unreasal present State: Were I to be rich, I would keep
working anyway.
- 3rd: If you had arrived on time, we would have take the train.
o Had you arrived on time, we would have taken the train.
