LESSON 8:
Messianic Prophecy
A reporter presenting news may answer the questions “Who?”, 'What?”, “How?”, “When?”, “Where?”, and
“Why?”. The Old Testament prophets presented the Good News of the coming Messiah by answering
these same questions.
The figurative language in this verse means that Jesus Christ would defeat Satan (crush Satan's head),
but Satan would strike the heel of Christ (create the need for Christ to die on the cross).
It was typical for the Hebrews to write concerning the offspring of a man, but here Moses prophesied of
the seed of a woman. There was only one man who was the offspring of a woman and not the offspring of
a man: Jesus, the Messiah, who was born of a virgin.
BORN OF A VIRGIN
Prophecy: Isaiah 7:14. Born of a virgin.
Some have questioned the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, saying that the Hebrew word “almah”, which is
translated as “virgin” can also mean “young woman.” When the Hebrew Old Testament was translated
into the Greek Septuagint, the Hebrew “almah” was translated into the Greek word “parthenos”-meaning
that Immanuel would be born of a virgin. The Septuagint was completed prior to the time of Christ, so this
was a prophecy of a virgin birth, not merely something written after the fact. Matthew and Luke confirmed
that the virgin birth occurred.
Fulfilled: Matt. 1:18; Luke 3:23,34.
