1. Meaning of Slang
- How is slang made? By young ppl
- What is slang?
+ Slang – term of new and informal wrds & phrs tend 2 come fr # gr ( certain gr) in society.
+ Use 2 say sth new/old in unusual way.
E.g.: I’m pumped up/ psyched -> excited
+ Slang = playful & funny, use w/ frnds -> impolite & offensive
2. Reasons why ppl use slang
+ Import. Rs: makes ppl feel connected to prt of gr
e.g.: a gr of frnds, spend time 2gether -> use slang -> feel connected
+ Show casual & friendly ( common in workplace)
+ make speech colourful, kind of impress.
3. How the slang is created?
How ppl create new slang express. & change spoken lang.
+ Slang is created: var. interest. way, take old words & give new meaning
E.g.: “Wired”- adj: feel too excited, a little crazy, full of ener.
+a wrd didn’t exist b4 (come fr subcultures/ smaller gr inside culture
Ex: “Bling Bling” – noun: shinning jelwery - “Look at the bling bling she is wearing”. Created
by using old word in new ways.
+ Borrowing a wrd fr another culture. Slang in US incorporate hundred of wrds (German ppl,
Italian, CNese)
