Introduction

Flooding has become a serious problem in both the health and livelihood of the people residing
around Mr. Miguel Patolot’s lot in Antipolo del Norte. It has become the catch basin of
floodwater from different areas near the said lot. With this, Mr. Patolot asked the assistance of
DPWH to conduct a topographic survey that can be used for flood mitigation in the area.

Methodology

DPWH Survey Team led by Engr. Danielle Ann Libao conducted a topographic survey last May
12, 2022 in Mr. Miguel Patolot’s lot in Antipolo del Norte in order to gather elevation data and to
identify the source of the floodwater in the area. AutoCAD Civil 3D was used to process the
topographic data to produce a contour map.

Figure 1. The contour map shows a portion of Mr. Miguel Patolot’s lot affected by the flood.
Results and Discussion

Figure 2. The contour map shows the proposed drainage layout and the three (3) important
points in the area which are the water source, the lowest point and the proposed outfall.

In Figure 2, the water source, the lowest point and the proposed outfall is identified. Upon
inspection around the area, it was found out that an existing drainage system was present in the
adjacent lot in the west side of Mr. Patolot’s lot, so the floodwater from different households in
the higher areas flows to the lowest point located in Mr. Patolot’s lot.

To aid in flood mitigation, Engr. Gerald Virgilio Acusa recommended that a drainage system be
constructed to redirect the flow of the floodwater. The layout of the proposed drainage can also
be seen in Figure 2. The drainage system starts at the end of the drainage system in the
adjacent lot in the west and ends in the manhole of the existing drainage along the national
highway which is the proposed outfall.
Figure 3: The existing ground profile and a design profile of the proposed drainage is shown.

In Figure 3, the proposed drainage is a pipe culvert with a diameter of 0.910 m and a slope of
0.5%. It will be 120 m in length from the water source to the proposed outfall.
