EXPERIMENT-1

AIM :-To prepare 250mL of M/10 oxalic acid solution

THEORY:-

Molar mass of H2C2O4.2H2O (oxalic acid) = 126g mol-1

Amount of oxalic salt (W) needed to prepare 250mLof M/10 oxalic acid solution is calculated as:

W = Molarity x Molar mass of oxalic acid x Volume of solution

1000

= 1/10 x 126x 250

1000

= 3.15g

APPARATUS:-

Watch glass, electronic balance, volumetric flask , wash bottle.

PROCEDURE:-

(a) A watch glass , washed with distilled water and dried, is weighed accurately and its weight
recorded.
(b) 3.15g of oxalic acid is weighed on the watch glass .
(c) Oxalic acid is gently transferred from watch glass into clean and dry volumetric flask using a
funnel. The watch glass is washed with distilled water in order to transfer all the particles sticking
to it .
(d) The funnel is washed several times with distilled water to transfer the sticking particles into the
volumetric flask
(e) The measuring flask is swirled till solid oxalic acid dissolves.
(f) Enough distilled water is added to the volumetric flask carefully upto just below the etched mark
on it with the help of wash bottle.
(g) Last few mL is added dropwise with the help of a pipette until lower meniscus just touches the
etched mark on the volumetric flask and the volume of the solution is made up.. Standard solution
of M/10 oxalic acid solution is thus prepared.

PRECAUTIONS:

(a) Weighing of oxalic acid must be done accurately.

(b) All the crystals of weighed Oxalic acid must be transferred carefully to the volumetric flask
from the watch glass and funnel.
(c) Addition of water must be done very carefully so that the lower level of meniscus just
touches the etched mark.
