HERMAS
This book, divided into thr ee parts, called his VISIONS, COMMANDS, and
SIMILITUDES, is thus entitled, because it was composed by Her mas, br other to Pius, bish -
op of Rome; and because the Angel, who bears the principal part in it, is r epr esented in the
for m and habit of a shepherd. Ir enxus quotes it under the ver y name of Scriptur e. Origen
thought it a most useful writing , and that it was divinely inspir ed; Eusebius says that, though
it was not esteemed canonical, it was r ead publicly in the churches, which is cor r oborated by
Jer ome; and Athanasius cites it, calls it a most useful work, and obser ves, that though it was
not strictly canonical, the Fathers appointed it to be r ead for dir ection and confir mation in
faith and piety. Jer ome, notwithstanding this, and that he applauded it in his catalogue of
writers, in his comments upon it afterwards, ter ms it apocr yphal and foolish. Turtullian
praised it when a Catholic, and abused it when a Montanist. Although Gelasius ranks it
among the apocr yphal books, it is found attached to some of the most ancient MSS . of the
New Testament; and Archbishop Wake, believing it the genuine work of an apostolical Father,
pr eser ves it to the English r eader by the for egoing translation, in which he has r ender ed the
thr ee parts of it not only mor e exact, but in gr eater purity than they had befor e appear ed. The
archbishop pr ocur ed Dr. Grabe to entir ely collate the old Latin version with an ancient MS . in
the Lambeth librar y; and the lear ned pr elate himself still further impr oved the whole fr om a
multitude of fragments of the original Gr eek never befor e used for that pur pose.
