Started when Pres. Rodrigo Duterte becoming president of the Philippines in June 2016,
Rodrigo Duterte has launched a war on drugs that has resulted in the extrajudicial deaths of
thousands of alleged drug dealers and users across the country. According to the experts, "The
president sees drug dealing and addiction as “major obstacles to the Philippines’ economic and
social progress,”. The drug war is a cornerstone of Duterte’s domestic policy and represents the
extension of policies he had implemented earlier in his political career as the mayor of the city of
Davao. In December 2016, the United States withheld poverty aid to the Philippines after
declaring concern over Duterte’s war on drugs.

Like many Filipinos, I was doubtless about President Duterte's stern war against illegal drugs
as he promised during his election campaign. But during Digong’s colorful language and
allegations of human rights abuses by certain sectors here. The new administration’s war on
drugs might have escaped international attention. While illegal drugs have proved to be a grave
threat to the stability and growth of developing countries, there have been notable trends in the
last decade in decriminalizing abuse of dangerous drugs.Drugs have long been legal in Italy. In
recent years, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Canada have designated parks and centers
where drugs may be distributed and used without risking arrest.

The Philippine judicial system is very slow and perceived as corrupt, enabling Duterte to act
proactively and address the issue of drugs in a non-constructive way with widespread violations
of human rights. Moreover, in the face of a corrupt, elite-dominated political system and a slow,
ineffective, and equally corrupt judicial system, people are willing to tolerate this politician who
promised something and is now delivering.

To sum it up, it may be hard for us to address if the war on drugs in Duterte's administration is
effective since there would be a disadvantage and advantage during the operation. Based on
fact there are innocent people who have been convicted without having justice. Wherein this is
not capable in terms of Human Rights.
