CONDITIONAL CLAUSES

Conditional type 0

If + Present Simple + Present Simple = Facts, rules and laws of nature

e.g. If you heat water, it boils.

Conditional type 1

If + Present Simple + Future Simple = Probability

e.g. If you study hard, you will have good marks.

You will have good marks if you study hard.

Conditional type 2

If + Past Simple + Conditional (would+infinitive) = Improbability

e.g. If you studied hard, you would have good marks.

e.g. If I were you, I would study hard. = give advice

Unless = if not

E.g. You will fail the test unless you study hard.

Unless you study hard, you will fail the test.

Conditional type 3

If + Past Perfect + Conditional Perfect (would have + Past Participle) = Impossibility

e.g. If you had studied hard, you would have had good marks.

We use Type 3 to express criticism or regret
