10.3 RESTRICTION ORIFICES
10.3.1 Construction
It is recommended to use the square edge orifice, see (3.1.8).
Construction and dimensions to match the type and size of flanges or fittings used; for the flanged
construction, see (3.1.9) and for the union construction, see (10.3.9).
103.2 Application
Simple device for creating a certain pressure drop or limiting a flow rate.
Although not a device for measurement of flow, it has been incorporated because of similarity in the
method of calculation.
103.3 Limitations
‘The minimum line size is 15 mm, the maximum line size is not limited,
Differential pressure/upstream pressure for compressible fluids:
dp/pi 3 0.25,
‘The recommended minimum 8 limit is 0.10, the maximum f is not critical.
103.4 Pressure tapings
Tappings are not essential, although a line pressure indication upstream and downstream of the
restriction orifice is recommended for checking of the behaviour of the device.
103.5 Discharge coefficient
For 15 > D > 50 mm and 0.1 =
2 0.2: C = 0.6097 for liquids
C = 0.519 for gas and steam,
For D 2 50 mm and f = 0.2, sce the following table:

103.6 Expansion factor
Use formula for square edge with flange tappings
— [0.41 + 0.35 B4]-[(DP)/p]-[X/10P-K-!
131103.7 Calculation
Limitations, see (10.3.3)
Sizing, according to the formula as for the square edge orifice with flange appings (31.10) except forthe
values of C, see (10.3.5) and , see (10.3.6)
Flow rate, according to the formula as described forthe square edge orifice with flange tappings, except
for the values of C, see (10.3.5) and ¢, see (10.3.6)
Steam correction factor F,, see (14.4)
Uncertainty, see (13)
This calculation method under (10.3.7) is also valid for the constructions with a union-type of orifice
