Ravinder Sharma SG-NR | ORAN | VoLTE | 4G | Ex-Erisson | Amdocs + Follow Published Jul 13, 2020 Difference between NR-ARFCN and GSCN Many a times question arises that why do we need ARFCN and what is the need for separate GSCN in 5G which has similar characteristics of frequency raster like ARFCN ARFCN is generally used for initial cell search where UE scans all frequencies and try lateh on to legitimated frequency. Let us take an example of 4G where frequency raster is of 100KHz. When UE searches frequency to latch on, it searches in the step size of 100KHz. UE searches desired frequency and then it starts searching PSS/SSS to get synchronize to the cell. This is called channel rastet. In 4G both frequency and channel raster are of same spacing which 100KHz. Also, the position of PSS/SSS in 4G is fixed at the centre of the channel bandwidth (DC). When UE scans the channel raster it knows the position of PSS/SSS. Now the problem arises in 5G where the position of PSSISS: channel bandwidth. To me, the reason for this is because the whole BW is categorised in different BWP with different SCS (subcarrier-spacing). So the position of PSS/SSS is not fixed. UE needs to identify the position of PSSISSS. not fixed to the center of the Position of PSS/SSS can be derived by two ways 1, Frequency Offset Approach 2. ARFCN Approach Exequeney Offset Approach: In Frequency offset approach, further two offsets are derived which are Resource Block offset and SSB-subcarrier offset Resource block offset is identified by parameter offsettoPointA. This tells the position of CRBO (Common Resource Block 0) and Common resource block of SS/PBCH. Once the resource block offset where SS/PBCH is allocated. This tified, Now we need to identify the subcarrier info lated from MIB and PBCH. The granularity of both frequency raster and. synchronizations raster is different ‘The granularity of synchronization raster cannot be lower than that of frequency raster because if we do so then UE will need more time to scan all channels and to identify SS/PBCH block. So Synchronization raster is wider with step size of 50/150/250KHz compare to frequency raster of $/15/60KHz. ‘This makes the requirement of different ARECN and GSCN.
