Agitator Vessel Design

The rectangular shape was selected to be studied with the below parameters figure (a). It is made
by un-baffled acryl material due to its transparency and the agitation can be seen visually.

The design of the vessel as follow:

- The shape of the vessel is rectangular

Width= 0.24 m 0.3
Length= 0.24 m m

Height= 0.3 m
- The volume of the vessel
0.24 m
Volume = 0.01728 m
0.24 m

Figure (a)

Usually dished bottom and cylindrical vessel shape are widely used in industrial aspects.
However, we used the rectangular flat based vessel and we noticed that the dispersion of gasses
was varied in all direction axially and radially.

Figure b1

As illustrated in the vessel drawings above figure (b), there is a dead volume which must be
taking in consideration as the shape of the vessel is not ideal. In the perfect mixer the
concentration of all species are uniform but in any process unit with corners or baffles, stagnant
regions occurs. There are many geometrical parameters to avoid the dead volumes in the vessel:
1. Ideal vessel shape; for example, cylindrical concave base vessel.
2. Increase the speed of the agitator within the allowable range
3. Choosing standard design parameters of sizes and appropriate design impellers by finding
the ratio of impeller diameter d to vessel diameter D (d/D). Moreover, the appropriate
location of impeller in the vessel which is in the center
4. Increase the mixing time
