Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
In the beginning, I had to choose what I wanted to do my instructions on. I didn’t want to do
something too difficult so that it would be easy to explain to a novice. I thought a recipe was perfect
because basically anyone can do them with the right equipment. I decided to do banana bread
because I have made it many times in the past and it is delicious.

First Draft (for peer editing)

I pulled a recipe together and outlined the equipment and procedure. I made sure to go through the
recipe and think of all the equipment needed. I also kept in mind novices and explained every step. I
also added small tips to help the user. I thought it would be a nice design element to add a cartoon
picture at the top of the document and match the color of the picture and the headings.

Second Draft (for your packet)

After peer review, I added a picture of steps to help the user. The picture was taken from the internet
because I didn’t have time to make banana bread and document it myself. Next, I took out the
instruction to mash with a fork and changed it to a hand mixer.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

For the final draft, I put a border around my floating picture and positioned it at the side of the page.
I also broke down the picture of the steps and added each picture to its respective step. Lastly, if
there was a tip I included in a step, I added it right under the step instead of on the same line.
