BALOCHISTAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY
KHUZDAR, PAKISTAN
Area

Weak Artificial Intelligence (AI based clean water and sanitation system)

Reason for selection:

In Balochistan there are many areas where Artificial Intelligence techniques can be used, clean water
and sanitation is one of them where Artificial Intelligence techniques can be used. Providing clean water
and sanitation is the responsibility of government and it is very difficult, According to recent UN report
on global clean and sanitation suggest that over 40% of the world population still doesn’t have to safely
managed drinking water. Waterborne diseases are bacteria and viruses spread through water.

Developing country like Pakistan and specially the area

of Khuzdar which water is mixed with other minerals
causing many diseases diarrhea, vomiting, skin,
respiratory, eye diseases and specially kidney problems
according to healthcare expert 28% of population
facing these problems.

AI as solution:

In short, the noble purpose of delivering clean water

and sanitation needs serious attention and innovation.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to help
resolve challenges related to clean water and
sanitation. It is helping utilities and municipalities to
better manage their water and wastewater systems to
ensure a clean and sanitized water supply.

Provided below the key area where AI can help utilities provide efficient water and sewer services to
their communities and stakeholders:

AI Reduces the Spending Stress of Water Treatment Facilities.

Currently, the status quo of water treatment plant operation is a challenge for many utilities. Inefficient
operations, high energy bills, and costly chemical dosing regimens can lead to a tight budget, and with
the added concern of compliance, priorities become even more difficult to balance.

AI technology applied to existing IT investments helps utilities run water treatment facilities more
efficiently by reducing their OPEX (operating expenses). AI-powered software solutions learn from a
plant’s past performance and then prescribes optimal control actions based on a plant’s energy and
chemical goals as well as the system’s real-time and forecasted conditions.

These types of AI solutions can optimize the operator’s time on routine tasks so they can be focused on
high priority site-specific goals and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). From a financial and operational
standpoint, running an energy-efficient and operationally optimized water treatment plant is more
feasible using an AI solution using an AI solution.
How it works:

Collect Water

Learn New Inspect under

Contaminations Microscope

AI Detects
Update Database
Contamination

In worldwide some countries are using AI based systems a well-known system listed below:

KETOS Wave KETOS Shield

AI algorithm with +20 different sensors Measures +20 contaminants

Detects water flow, pressure, usage, volume, etc. AL algorithm that finds spike threads and

Warns user of malfunctions identifies causes

Predicts contamination spikes

Challenges:

Local government is not interested in new innovation like AI.

Lack of skills persons to develop these systems.

Lack of skills persons to operate systems, and so on.

Control factors:

Above mentioned system can be used at home anyone can purchase and install the system.

Uncontrolled factors:

Providing clean water is the responsibility of government authorities, also providing water through
water supply government should install AI based water purification system within existing systems.
