Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I wanted to write an instruction packet about something that I knew how to do well and I have made
a lot of guacamole so I thought that would be a good subject for me. The instructions were all from
memory so not a lot of planning was required.

First Draft (for peer editing)

This section was pretty easy for me, I just went through the ingredients and steps needed to make
guacamole and wrote them down. I also wanted to add an image so I found one with a transparent
background because I thought it made the document look more professional.

Second Draft (for your packet)

I had difficulty writing the usability test because I didn’t really understand what it was. To overcome
this challenge I went and read through the textbook to find examples and answers for how to write
it. The main change I made was bolding the headings to emphasize them more.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

I worked on changing the steps to only have one sentence for each step. I also took some
information out of the steps and added them to a tips and tricks section which looked much better.
The document was also bland before, and I added some extra formatting to separate the different
regions and emphasize certain areas. I learned about how to better format documents in this
section.
