Differentiating Expression from Equation

Observe the given data in the box. What is the difference between the two?

A. B.

An expression is a combination of numbers and variables combined by

mathematical operations or symbols.

Examples:

2n – 6 8y - 5

8+7 20 ÷ 5 x 12

10 + 3 x 4 2b x 9

An equation is a mathematical sentence formed by placing an equal sign (=)

between two expressions.

2n – 6 = 4 3y = 15

45 + 5 = 50 52 = 25

2 + (2x5) = 12 10 + 7 – 2(3) = 11

In algebra, we have expressions and equations. An expression is like a phrase. Here

are some examples of expressions and how they relate to word phrases:

Expression Words Phrase

3+5 3 plus 5 the sum of three and five

n−1 n minus one the difference of n and one

6⋅7 6 times 7 the product of six and seven

x/y x divided by y the quotient of x and y

Equation Sentence

3+5=8 The sum of three and five is equal to eight.

n−1=14 n minus one equals fourteen.

6⋅7=42 The product of six and seven is equal to forty-two.

97 | M a t h e m a ti c s 6 ( 4 t h Q u a r t e r : W e e k 3 1 )
Equation Sentence

x=53 x is equal to fifty-three.

y+9=2y−3 y plus nine is equal to two y minus three.

Activity Week 31

Determine which of the following are expressions and which are equations by
writing it in the proper column.

Expressions Equations

(15-10) + 13 3x – 2x 4 x 10 = 40 12y = 108

15 x 6 = n 10 – a 5n + 8 = 43 75 + (100 – 23)

120 ÷ 10 x 5 = n 53 - 23
