Finite Elements Exercises

Final Exam: 5 Questions, answer all.

1. Referring to Figure Q3, one-dimensional bar has cross-sectional area, Ae = 300 mm2
and Young’s modulus, E = 200 GPa. Given data: q1 = 0.2 mm and q2 = 0.6 mm.

(a) If given u = 0.36 mm, determine the distance x for point P from point 1.
(8 Marks)
(b) Calculate strain and stress occurred at the bar.
(7 Marks)
(c) Estimate strain energy in the bar.

Please use these equations:

(a)

(b) Calculate stress strain by using One-Dimensional equations above (ξ).

(c) Calculate the strain energy in the bar (Ue)
2. Figure below shows a two-member plane truss supported by a linearly elastic spring.
The truss members are of a solid circular cross section having d=20 mm and
E=80Gpa. The linear spring has stiffness constant 50 N/mm.
(a) Assemble the system global stiffness matrix and calculate the global
displacements of the unconstrained node;

(b) Compute the reaction forces and check the equilibrium conditions;
